At the Edge of All Things
Raw Log - Session 016
<jacobkosh>: I wanted to begin with something a bit different tonight. You guys have bought your Sanctum with merits, you’ve got a cabal name and you’re officially recognized. I want to run a brief scene about your group moving into the sanctum. I’d like everyone to describe something they’re doing, and tell us one true thing about the place
<jacobkosh>: like “it has a spooky cellar” or “the garage accommodates three cars” or “I’m planting an herb garden”
<jacobkosh>: something to personalize it
<desc>: Clearly it needs a modest bar
<jacobkosh>: The sanctum has a bar! boom
<jacobkosh>: that is now true
<thomamelas>: It has a nook with a comfortable chair that is almost supernaturally good for reading. Yet not a trace of magic in that spot.
<ell>: jacobkosh I mean the chat thread runneth over
<desc>: The bar itself has a little shelf with a motley assortment of bottles cobbled together at varying levels of full-ness but only one of two lights for it work right now.
<desc>: Slowly but surely we will stock it to a level that would impress the snootiest guests.
<desc>: Okay what makes our library badass? Hmm.
<desc>: and jake’s robotic minion stomps all over our first amendent rights again
<desc>: tree of liberty, blood of tyrants, etc
<ell>: Aurelia has soundproofed one of the upstairs rooms, with plush furniture
<misteranthropy>: The library is found at the back of the house in a room with vaulted ceilings. Glass double-doors lead from there to the backyard, which is bounded by a tall, thorny hedge.
<desc>: The library needs lots of warm, indirect lighting. Harsh overhead lighting is scrub tier. The shelves are a mix of brand new graphic design-y looking books and musty archaic tomes put in an order which only makes sense to the cabal.
<ell>: The library stacks are huge. There’s in fact an upper railing, with a small balcony from the upstairs
<ell>: basically the whole house is built around the library
<jacobkosh>: I am writing all this down on the wiki page for the sanctum
<jacobkosh>: it is now immutable fact
<jacobkosh>: (keep going, don’t let me stop you if you’re not done)
<desc>: Do we have a kitchen? We need a kitchen for snacks.
<ell>: there’s a spiral staircase in the library
<thomamelas>: The basement has a pretty decent home gym set up. A really good treadmill, medium quality stationary bike, free weights, etc. And a section with padded walls and floor.
<ell>: (have you seen the library at skywalker ranch? This is what I’m imagining"
<desc>: Backyard: an area which is set aside for future gardening but none of us have actually done anything. Inexplicably: part of a very worn croquet set is set up. We may or may not have put it there. Extremely beat up patio furniture.
<jacobkosh>: (in the back of comic books they used to have like, the cross-section diagrams of xavier’s mansion or justice league HQ or whatever. that is what this totally reminds me of )
<desc>: googling skywalker ranch library. nom nom.
<ell>: (or the hearst castle library)
<misteranthropy>: Sinon has used mind magic to grant himself the crafting skills necessary to begin building hidden compartments and passages through the library to other parts of the house. There is an attic office in which he has placed much of his ‘spy’ gear.
<jacobkosh>: (oh my god guys I just had an idea)
<jacobkosh>: (do the cabal and sanctum in the sims)
<ell>: (ok, where is the hallow? It has to be upstairs)
<ell>: (I’ll get RIGHT ON THAT!)
<ell>: (Like srsly, installing that as soon as we’re done and will take pics)
<misteranthropy>: maybe an upstairs bedroom has a deck/balcony with a small garden or fountain (to collect tass)?
<jacobkosh>: Yeah, that is totally do-able
<thomamelas>: Woo! Saves BJ some crafting if we can have water soak up the mana.
<ell>: okay, Aurie is taking an upstairs bedroom, next to her meditation room, adjoining the library
<ell>: (what is size? How many rooms are we working with again?)
<misteranthropy>: something like 4-5
<misteranthropy>: no that would be bedrooms
<misteranthropy>: am pulling up the book to double check
<misteranthropy>: i think we have 4 dots of size (one each)?
<misteranthropy>: that would be a mansion
<jacobkosh>: yeah that sounds about right!
<misteranthropy>: so 9-15 rooms
<jacobkosh>: it’s kind of perfect because I was looking at vancouver real estate in this neighborhood (west of downtown, near university of british columbia) and the houses were about that size
<jacobkosh>: and are absolutely the sort to have roof gardens and hedges and the like
<jacobkosh>: if I get ambitious I might find “your” house
<jacobkosh>: alrighty, boom: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/at-the-edge-of-all-things/wikis/sanctum-of-the-searchers
<desc>: let’s tear out all the walls upstairs and make a giant roller rink
<desc>: i bet no other cabal has a roller rink
<jacobkosh>: now that I think about it
<jacobkosh>: there has to be a free council roller derby girls cabal
<jacobkosh>: there just has t obe
<thomamelas>: Can I set up one more room?
<thomamelas>: Converting one of the bedrooms to a magical crafting area. Odd mixture of hand tools and arcane one. And a mixture of hermetic and Christian mystical symbols.
<desc>: (craft us rollerskates)
<ell>: I wish The Sims let you model domestic servants
<jacobkosh>: I forgot to ask, thom, is Nodens living in the sanctum now?
<jacobkosh>: or “living”
<jacobkosh>: whatever the verb is
<misteranthropy>: uh, and what about the not-zombie?
<thomamelas>: Nodens is tied to BJ’s apartment for now.
<ell>: I’m keeping her in the sanctum. Don’t worry, she’s clean now
<ell>: Aurelia is probably going to not resign her lease
<ell>: Too bad that’s not going to come up for another 4 months
<jacobkosh>: she could illegally sub-let!
<misteranthropy>: she could have the zombie sign the sub-let!
<jacobkosh>: oh my god
<jacobkosh>: it’s perfect
<jacobkosh>: “i will create a horde of zombies! and they will help me commit THE ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE FRAUD”
<ell>: zombie is staying in the sanctum
<jacobkosh>: does it stay in aurelia’s room?
<desc>: if zombie real estate fraud were a thing, it would have happened in orange county
<ell>: She is alive and doesn’t smell and is perfectly fine
<ell>: Just somewhat suggestible and boring
<ell>: ok, very suggestible and practically soulless but still
<desc>: the zombie is creepy as fuck and Elithora will make a point to never be alone with it
<misteranthropy>: minus the practically part if we go by the book…
<ell>: Yes. Really it’s more her room at this point, since Aurelia still has her tiny studio.
<jacobkosh>: it just sits around watching duck dynasty all day long
<ell>: Right right right, had her soul magically stripped away. Whatever
<ell>: I am going to downplay all of the negatives always
<thomamelas>: Hey. I watch Duck Dynasty.
<jacobkosh>: (“come on guys FREE ZOMBIE, you don’t just throw that away”)
<jacobkosh>: Morrissey cancelled an appearance on jimmy kimmel last week because the duck dynasty family was going to be on before him
<ell>: (I’m sorry but my D&D habits are hard to break )
<thomamelas>: Hey, so while we’re talking cabal stuff, there is something I need.
<jacobkosh>: Ok, so! It’s been a week since the last Consilium meeting, and since BJ and Sinon’s little murder mystery, and since Elithora visited Seattle (the outcome of that remains a mystery for now ). The sanctum is now more or less as you guys have wanted it.
<jacobkosh>: oh, go ahead!
<thomamelas>: I need to know our sigil is. BJ is supposed to be wearing it as Banner Warden.
<desc>: oh sh, that’s right.
<desc>: Elithora is going to vote for something incomprehensible as a cabal logo. Hmm.
<thomamelas>: I’m proposing a shield with an open book on it.
<desc>: I’m buzzing through the S&S book for examples so I don’t propose something that totally does not fit how sigils work.
<jacobkosh>: well ok
<jacobkosh>: here are the basics
<jacobkosh>: there’s the Emblem, which is just the logo
<jacobkosh>: and that’s the part you guys need to decide
<jacobkosh>: it’s like a sports team’s logo or a company’s. it can be a boar’s head, a Ferrari, the scales of justice, whatever
<jacobkosh>: and then there’s the Banner
<jacobkosh>: which is the more elaborate version
<desc>: proposal: dolan.gif
<jacobkosh>: that incorporates the Emblem and also all the symbology of what Rights you guys respect
<jacobkosh>: so at the very least, you’ll want to agree on an Emblem
<misteranthropy>: someone did a version of one on devaintart:
<jacobkosh>: so that cabal respects all the Great Rights except Emeritus
<jacobkosh>: as you can see by the line of symbols at the bottom – the chalice, scroll, crossings and shield
<ell>: there is no sword
<jacobkosh>: ohhh right yes
<jacobkosh>: i misread scroll as skull. scroll makes way more sense
<ell>: I propose our emblem should be a sword through a rolled scroll
<jacobkosh>: it would be a nice callback to killing the Abyssal book!
<ell>: For the irony
<misteranthropy>: i am fine with either of those ideas (shield & book; sword & scroll)
<thomamelas>: Works for me.
<desc>: Elithora has some elaborate powerpoint proposal about alchemical symbolism which only makes sense to her. Three ravens biting each others’ tailfeathers inside a bottle.
<jacobkosh>: created a power point presentation, eh? ROLLING FOR WISDOM DEGENERATION
<critical>: jacobkosh, 7d10h8: 4 [7d10h8=7,9,[10,10,10,5],4,2,2,7]
<jacobkosh>: you pass
<jacobkosh>: this time
<thomamelas>: Three of us seem to be okay with the sword and scroll. Will Ms Power Point go along with it?
<desc>: someday I will destroy a foe with powerpoint in this game
<thomamelas>: God that would be a terrible abyssal monster.
<jacobkosh>: boom! so mote it be! the cabal’s emblem is a scroll with a sword through it
<jacobkosh>: now let’s decide on your Rights
<jacobkosh>: there are five and we just need to establish yes or no
<ell>: (military intelligence insignias are the best inspirations)
<jacobkosh>: with the caveat that nobody is obligated to respect a Right that your cabal doesn’t respect
<thomamelas>: I’m in favor of all five.
<jacobkosh>: First one: The Right of Crossing. People have the right to pass through your territory, provided they don’t use offensive magic, disturb nothing, and don’t hang around inappropriately
<jacobkosh>: ok, I’ll note that
<ell>: no on emeritus and nemesis, sayeth Aurelia
<misteranthropy>: Sinon is fine with everything but Emeritus.
<misteranthropy>: (do you want Sacerdote coming in and giving us orders we are bound to?)
<ell>: (uhhh nope!)
<jacobkosh>: well I do
<jacobkosh>: thom, do you want to argue in favor of either of those?
<ell>: (as a note: nothing is stopping Elithora from having a personal emblem)
<desc>: right of crossing seems fine. I mean, we’re not standing on the porch with a shotgun yellin’
<thomamelas>: Sacerdote is seen as having a positive effect on the cabal? BJ would disagree.
<thomamelas>: And with nemesis we can curtail violation of the veil by preventing people from taking it outside.
<desc>: (personal emblem: her own face with stunner shades on. deal with it.)
<jacobkosh>: desc, next up is the right of hospitality. that one is pretty straightforward. people can request asylum with you guys for a while and you’re honor bound to respect it and protect them
<jacobkosh>: sometimes people can be dicks and like, request hospitality after they’ve created a Paradox
<jacobkosh>: but honoring the right allows you to request hospitality in turn.
<desc>: I mean it seems neighborly and all..
<desc>: I vote yup
<jacobkosh>: then there’s Nemesis, which basically says that you will stay out of other people’s fights and expect them to stay out of yours
<ell>: Aurelia is totally against not-interfering
<ell>: interfering is in her blood!
<misteranthropy>: that’s why you interfere while under disguise!
<ell>: get all up in everyone else’s business!
<thomamelas>: Can we limit Nemesis to the duel arcane?
<jacobkosh>: yeah you can absolutely do that
<jacobkosh>: in that case it would simply be “we will not fuck with your duels, don’t fuck with ours”
<desc>: oh that seems like a good compromise.
<thomamelas>: Would that be acceptable to those opposed to Nemesis? Keep people from breaking the furnature?
<misteranthropy>: we could still interfere given nemesis if a feud endangered sleepers (under our care—which could be just about anyone if we lawyer it right)
<thomamelas>: Like the zombie?
<misteranthropy>: i am fine with either version.
<ell>: fine with me
<jacobkosh>: The next right is Emeritus, which is the “respect your elders” right
<ell>: I’ll make sure nobody endangers my poor little monster
<jacobkosh>: although it can be more complicated, such that for instance you defer to experts in their respective fields
<ell>: nobody gon defer to us anyway
<thomamelas>: You guys accepted nemesis, I’ll drop my request for Emeritus.
<jacobkosh>: heh yeah junior cabals don’t really gain much by respecting Emeritus, it seems to me
<ell>: so “We’ll defer to you if… uh, maybe in the future sometime you’ll be like, ok with us?”
<jacobkosh>: yeah as written it just seems like a bad deal and they don’t really give any examples of how it could be a good one
<misteranthropy>: it’s good once you become a master
<desc>: hmm. I guess I am not too concerned with that one. but if there are no takebacks I guess this explains why young pups like us get to be snotty.
<desc>: because everyone says “nah” when they are new and then years later it’s their turn to get disrespected
<misteranthropy>: who cares? you can rewrite their minds by then!
<misteranthropy>: oh wait.
<ell>: I can already do that
<ell>: readin up on my old toy
<misteranthropy>: i just look forward to making it lasting/permanent via attainment
<jacobkosh>: lastly is the Right of Sanctuary
<jacobkosh>: this one is almost more of an agreement among yourselves
<jacobkosh>: that none of you will compromise the sanctum’s security
<thomamelas>: Agree to it.
<ell>: not I said the cat
<ell>: I agree
<desc>: yeah, who wants to mess it up
<jacobkosh>: so Crossing, Hospitality, Sanctuary, and Nemesis (limited to duels), is that right?
<jacobkosh>: Boom, okay! http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/at-the-edge-of-all-things/wikis/the-searchers
<jacobkosh>: I’ll see if I can make your guys’ banner later
<jacobkosh>: what colors would it be?
<jacobkosh>: they mention that the traditional colors correspond to the auras seen in aura sight (pg 206 of the book)
<jacobkosh>: so there’s like calm, compassionate, desirous/lustful, afraid, envious, frenzied, psychotic (hahahaha that would be great), idealistic, sad, lovestruck, innocent, etc etc
<jacobkosh>: “confused” – mottled shifting colors
<thomamelas>: Light blue for calm?
<jacobkosh>: you guys are pretty calm. you’ve avoided almost all the opportunities for violence so far
<jacobkosh>: in that respect you’ve been kind of the opposite of the typical PC party
<desc>: hrm. the ones where you want things all tend towards green so I am going to vote Elithora’s is some muted greenish shade.
<misteranthropy>: maybe the /sword/ should be light blue. but we totally need a purple question mark.
<jacobkosh>: (1 sec)
<desc>: the entire banner is calm sky blues
<desc>: someone knocks on our door
<desc>: didn’t see that coming did ya
<jacobkosh>: Someone coming to knock on your door, eh?
<jacobkosh>: What a coincidence!
<jacobkosh>: It’s a Saturday around noon, a week after the last Consilium meeting. Who is likely to be at the Sanctum at a time like this, and what are you doing if you are? (and if you aren’t, what are you doing?)
<desc>: No classes to teach on a Saturday so Elithora is likely to be there, moving books to one place, then back, then frowning indecisively.
<thomamelas>: Is sitting in the chair, reading a book on vampire lore. Well trying to. He appears kind of distracted.
<ell>: saturdays are off, aurelia is busy reprogramming her robot
<ell>: (why does it always wake up deprogrammed? so weird)
<jacobkosh>: There’s a knock at the door. Or a buzz at the front gate. (do you guys have a gate? does it have a buzzer?)
<misteranthropy>: Sinon arrives back at the Sanctum around 11am with a caddy full of coffees and a bag with various baked goods. He has been out observing the goings on at Vancouver General Hospital, memorizing names and routines.
<misteranthropy>: there is totally a gate with a buzzer
<misteranthropy>: need to rotect the insane library
<thomamelas>: Gets up and goes to look at the camera over looking the gate.
<jacobkosh>: Thom, Blackjack recognizes this person! It’s Tia, the middle-aged native woman from Chemical Wedding earlier in the week.
<jacobkosh>: You remember that she’s also a Herald.
<thomamelas>: Calling out. “We have company. They are either here on offical business or challenge me to a duel.”
<thomamelas>: Opens the gate.
<ell>: “Already? Ugh.”
<thomamelas>: Goes to unlock the door and open it for their guest.
<desc>: (argh phone .. eli is in the library for a second)
<jacobkosh>: The gate opens and the woman strides up the driveway to your front door, whereupon you let her in. She’s wearing denim jeans and a baggy flannel over a t-shirt, and a felt hat with a feather in it, which she removes as she enters. “Howdy.”
<misteranthropy>: A bookcase opens in the library and Sinon steps down from the narrow stairwell behind it. He walks down the spiral staircase, adjusting the cufflinks on his usual suit. He passes by Elithora—who is engrossed in a rather large tome—and walks to the front of the house to join the others.
<jacobkosh>: She drums her fingers lightly along the inside of her hat as she turns around, taking in the place. She whistles slowly. “You folks’ve really made yourselves at home. It looks good.” She offers a hand to Sinon. “Tia.”
<ell>: Aurelia is dressed to unimpress. Yoga pants and a sweatshirt.
<jacobkosh>: She offers Aurelia a hand as well, when Aurie appears.
<misteranthropy>: Sinon grasps the Herald’s hand and gives a single firm shake. “Sinon.”
<thomamelas>: Is dressed casually in a button down oxford and khakis. The cabal’s sigil embrotiered onto his shirt pocket. Nods to Tia. “Hello again.”
<jacobkosh>: “Good to see you again. No hard feelings about earlier, right?” She smiles; it’s surprisingly pleasant, given how severe her face looks normally.
<thomamelas>: “You caught me on a bad night.” Offers his hand as a peace offering.
<jacobkosh>: She takes BJ’s hand, nodding, the white skunk stripe in her long black hair kind of bobbing. “I’m glad to hear it, friend. Unfortunately, I’m not here on a social call today. There’s somebody wants a private word with you folks – a Councilor.”
<thomamelas>: Raises an eyebrow. It’s a good trick.
<desc>: (okay sorry — if that were my regular dbag friends I would ignore but it was someone important)
<jacobkosh>: (hahaha dude no worries)
<desc>: Elithora comes downstairs holding a book in a language which is only half real. “Did someone ring the .. oh!”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon looks at the others. “Of course, we would be happy to meet with any member of the council.”
<jacobkosh>: “Ma’am.” Tia nods at the new arrival.
<jacobkosh>: Tia reaches into her pocket and produces a small round mirror. “Alright, then.” She sets it on the floor.
<ell>: Aurelia looks back and waves at Eli “Hey Eli! So is it Janis? or Minerva?”
<jacobkosh>: Tia half-smiles. “Smart kid.” She speaks a single word of the High Speech and the mirror glows, its edges limned with a bright light that races around the perimeter counterclockwise three times.
<jacobkosh>: There’s a small rush of air, and Minerva stands before you, blinking quickly behind her enormous glasses. “Oh….well, that was sudden. Thank you so much, Tia. You can go now.”
<jacobkosh>: Tia puts her felt hat back on and tips the brim toward Minerva. “Ma’am.” She nods briefly toward each of the cabal in turn, then turns around to leave.
<ell>: “You gonna need a ride back?”
<thomamelas>: Nods to Tia.
<ell>: Aurelia waves goodbye
<thomamelas>: “Welcome to our home Counciler.”
<jacobkosh>: “Hm? Oh, I’ve arranged for that to be taken care of already,” Minerva says. “Do you mind if I sit? I spent this morning climbing up and down ladders.”
<misteranthropy>: “Certainly.” Sinon leads the way back to the sitting room.
<misteranthropy>: (or the bar!)
<desc>: (get her tipsy)
<misteranthropy>: (i keep imagining that various alchemical or ritual components keep ending up behind the bar)
<jacobkosh>: She follows, and gratefully slumps into a chaise-lounge. She’s wearing a thin pink sweater over a gray wool skirt, from which her round ankles lead down to surprisingly sturdy shoes. “Ahh, tres bien, that is much better.” She pulls off the shoes and begins rubbing her feet vigorously.
<ell>: “Ladders of precious metal, or the ordinary kind?” Aurelia smirks conspiratorially
<ell>: (thom I am reading this prenda law stuff. it is delish)
<thomamelas>: (Do not annoy Federal Judges.)
<jacobkosh>: She laughs, mock-scandalized. “Oh, I’d never…well, there is that Montesquieu….but no, the ordinary kind. We’ve narrowed it down to five possible locations for the site of the first colony after the exile from Saguenay. It’s a very exciting time.” She looks at the cabal. “Your little clique has made a lot of waves recently, you know that?”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon follows the others into the room, turning to close the sliding doors behind them. He sits as the Councilor begins to speak.
<ell>: “Yeah, everyone keeps saying that.”
<desc>: Elithora settles into a seat facing Minerva. “Nonsense, we make ripples at the most.”
<misteranthropy>: “Our defense of the apostates has obviously fed into the tensions already present on the council.”
<thomamelas>: Takes a seat in the sitting room. “I am not sure why everyone keeps saying that. I thought we had a rather mild introduction to the consilium.”
<thomamelas>: (Jacob, check your private messages.)
<thomamelas>: “Can I get anyone anything to drink?”
<thomamelas>: Being a polite host.
<ell>: Aurelia raises her hand
<ell>: and then finds a comfy chair to sit in, pulling her knees up
<misteranthropy>: “Combined with the credibility we gained in helping deal with the Abyssal incursion means any move we make could be seen as pushing the rather precarious balance one way or the other.”
<jacobkosh>: She taps a forefinger on her chin for a moment. “Oh, you’ve all been quite circumspect and well-behaved in many ways. And almost everything you’ve done has been at the behest of other people. But those things have stirred a somewhat unstable brew…oh, my, yes. Gimlet, please.”
<thomamelas>: You can take the academic out of the classroom but you can’t take the classroom out of the academic.
<jacobkosh>: (there are four academics in this room right now )
<thomamelas>: “Yes Aurelia?” Awknowledges the counciler. "Yes, we seem to have amplified certain old greavances.
<thomamelas>: (I didn’t mean to hit enter, it should have been that then “Yes Aurelia.”
<ell>: “I’m not picky. Whatever we have available is fine. So long as it’s a little sweet.”
<thomamelas>: Looks to Sinon and Eli as a question.
<desc>: “Oh, gin on the rocks.”
<misteranthropy>: “Whiskey. Neat.” A second later. “Uh, Thanks.”
<desc>: “Unstable brew?”
<thomamelas>: “Noden. Two whiskeys, neat for Sinon and myself. Something sweet for Aurelia, a Gimlet for the Counsilor, and gin on the rocks for Elithora.” Speaking to the air.
<misteranthropy>: “The tension between the two sides I assume? The Guardians and the Arrow. The Mysterium and the Libertines.”
<misteranthropy>: “Not to mention the Seers, and the Apostates.”
<jacobkosh>: A spirit materializes – it takes the shape of a middle-aged man in an old double-breasted suit. “Very good, sir.” It moves to the bar and begins mixing.
<jacobkosh>: Minerva blinks. “You understand the situation very well, sinon. It’s – my word. Is that Marty Metcalfe?”
<ell>: “What tension between the Mysterium and the Libertines?”
<thomamelas>: “In a way. A copy of his spirit but with his memories.” Somewhat dismissively.
<jacobkosh>: The spirit bows to her. “I’ve borrowed his face and memories, yes. Bianca, yes? I warned you about never reading with enough light.” It tsks and goes back to mixing drinks.
<ell>: Aurelia fidgets. “Uhm, you want me to forget that?”
<jacobkosh>: She waves a hand dismissively. “If someone casts a sympathetic death spell at me, now I’ll know who to blame. Your friend Sinon is correct. The Consilium is split down the middle, with the Guardians and Arrows pushing for ever more control, more security, and the Libertines, naturally, resisting. The Mysterium tried to be a balancing influence….”
<thomamelas>: “But maintaining the balance means less being neutral and more working with the Free Council?”
<misteranthropy>: “Leaving Rattenbury to bear the burden of every decision.”
<jacobkosh>: “…no, we ‘tried.’ We gave up when Sacerdote started opposing every single one of our research efforts; our hands were forced. Even the Silver Ladder is divided. Rattenbury’s older, conservative faction is constantly tussling with younger elements.”
<jacobkosh>: “The Ladder is the smallest of the four Orders here and have tried to lead by making themselves useful to everyone. Look to Montesquieu, or Volcker – they make sure to provide useful services.”
<jacobkosh>: “What it comes down to is, a hundred years ago, there was a battle between the Pentacle and the Seers for control of Victoria and thus the province. We lost, and retreated here – to what was then a backwater, an afterthought.”
<ell>: “But not anymore”
<jacobkosh>: “Just so. The battle lines ever since have run straight down the Strait of Georgia, non? But the Seers outmaneuvered themselves. Vancouver is a world city, despite their best efforts, and Victoria is…what? So now they come here in force.”
<jacobkosh>: “They took over Simon Fraser University a few years ago. They make plays for BCU now – the Mysterium’s stronghold. The financial district is overrun with slaves of Mammon.”
<jacobkosh>: “We are under siege, and we are losing.”
<jacobkosh>: Nodens finishes the drinks and begins silently circulating around the room, bearing them on a silver tray.
<desc>: Elithora swirls the gin around the ice cubes in her glass. “How do we push back?”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon gras his glass and stares at it for a second.
<misteranthropy>: “Saguenay? Is that the hope?”
<thomamelas>: Takes his whiskey and sips it. “I am not very confident we have much hope.”
<jacobkosh>: “To me it is, yes. This is no mere archaeological project – I believe Saguenay’s secrets have the key to opposing the Seers. Has Blackjack told your cabal of his recent…inquiries?”
<ell>: Aurelia tastes whatever she is given, and nods approvingly.
<ell>: “No. What’s new, BJ?”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon looks over at the Arrow.
<thomamelas>: “Yes. And no.”
<thomamelas>: “In the 1940’s the Seers got their hands on a soulstone and a legancy. One that had a powerful gift of prophecy. It was assumed that the seers killed a member of Parlare’s cabal and taken it. That was not the case.” Taking a deep sip of his whiskey.
<thomamelas>: “The dead member was a seer double. One who is still alive. She killed Parlare. Subtle work, a poison.”
<ell>: “So she did take it! She was the seer spy! I knew it!” Aurelia raises her hand for a five, grinning.
<misteranthropy>: “A double or an infiltrator?”
<misteranthropy>: (just trying to rule out clones!)
<jacobkosh>: (one has to be sure about these things in this game, true)
<misteranthropy>: (actually, let’s assume Sinon actually said that.)
<thomamelas>: “I think she was turned but I have no proof.”
<ell>: (Jake: financial district = Erin. Just sayin
<jacobkosh>: (oooh true true)
<jacobkosh>: (Erin is Ell’s old character from the pbp we were in a few years ago)
<misteranthropy>: Sinon stares out a window behind Janis.
<ell>: “Well, if she’s still alive she must be ancient. I mean, really old.”
<misteranthropy>: or minerva even
<desc>: Eli gives Aurie a confused high five.
<misteranthropy>: “Was she Acanthus?”
<jacobkosh>: Minerva produces a small manila folder. “When Parlare was declared a murder, the investigation became official Council business, and Friday – who has very good things to say about Monsieur Blackjack, by the by – reported her findings to us. This made some things clear that had not been clear before.”
<ell>: Aurelia is happy to not be left hangin
<jacobkosh>: (you don’t know her path, but it would make sense)
<thomamelas>: Flushes for a moment when Friday saying nice things about him comes up.
<jacobkosh>: (something something the d)
<desc>: Elithora takes a long sip of her gin. “What have we found out?”
<jacobkosh>: “The dead woman was named Miranda, daughter of Prospero, a very important mage in his day. She was a member of the Ars Regia cabal, along with Parlare, Duncan, and Nodens.”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon reaches out for the folder. “If I may?”
<jacobkosh>: BJ’s ghost speaks up. “We were the greatest of friends. For a time.”
<jacobkosh>: Minerva hands Sinon the folder. It has a series of photographs in it.
<misteranthropy>: Sinon looks through the contents, memorizing each in turn.
<jacobkosh>: Some of the photographs are of the old Ars Regia cabal. Miranda, black-haired and gamine. Duncan, muscular and stern-faced. Nodens, a bit preppy and irreverent-looking. And Parlare, dressed casually and always pictured with a drink in hand.
<jacobkosh>: “Minerva was killed by the Seers in 1948. Or so we thought.”
<jacobkosh>: er, Miranda
<misteranthropy>: “The Fate spell?” SInon asks Blackjack.
<jacobkosh>: (the spell in the house?)
<thomamelas>: “Yes. And all of the pictures of her were taken. If those are pictures of her then they are very, very valuble.”
<misteranthropy>: (yeah, he is asking if that is how it was found. i know from reading the log.)
<jacobkosh>: “Look at the picture beneath those Ars Regia photographs, Sinon.” Minerva points.
<ell>: “The Mysterium has its own archives, guys.”
<jacobkosh>: (yeah, but most of those were cleaned out)
<misteranthropy>: Sinon clips through at Minerva’s instruction.
<jacobkosh>: It’s another photo – judging by the clothes and setting, it seems to be from the 1970s. It’s a woman, raven-haired, still thin, face showing a faint spider-web of lines and creases.
<jacobkosh>: But it’s recognizably Miranda.
<desc>: Elithora peers over Sinon’s shoulder. “Hmm.”
<jacobkosh>: “That is the one existing photograph of the Tetrarch of the Seers of the Throne for the Pacific Northwest. Her name is Milady, and she has been our Pentacle’s nemesis for fifty years now.”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon tilts his head.
<ell>: “Well that explains things.”
<jacobkosh>: Minerva nods. “It has explained much for the council as well. We five have discussed the implications for some time now. All this time, and we never knew our enemy had once been one of us.”
<thomamelas>: Finishes his whiskey in a single gulp. “Is it hoping too much that they put aside their differences?”
<misteranthropy>: “It happens more often than any would like to admit.” Sinon says, more quietly than usual.
<ell>: Aurelia frowns a bit, pulling her knees closer and looking down uncomfortably.
<jacobkosh>: Minerva laughs once, bitterly. "We would not know how to put aside our differences even if we wanted to at this point. You see how I have come to you? I could not come openly like a normal human being, lest those watching this place conclude your cabal was ready to join Janis’s brewing mutiny. I could not even send Finn.
<jacobkosh>: " It was good Tia owed me a favor, non?"
<thomamelas>: “My little at show the Anhk did not clear that up?”
<jacobkosh>: “It is much less about what you do, Blackjack, than it is about what people have predisposed themselves to see.”
<misteranthropy>: “It’s the symbol.”
<desc>: Elithora sighs into her gin cup, as if asking the gin if it can believe this shit that mages always get into.
<jacobkosh>: Minerva stands. “Miranda has used the Centaurus legacy against us for some time now. Its predictions are vague, like Nostradamus, you see? They require interpretation. There is no such thing as perfect prediction anyway – but it is enough to change a few little outcomes, here and there.”
<ell>: Aurelia shrugs. “You’re the head of our order. That’s ridiculous.”
<jacobkosh>: “It is the way of things right now, Aurelia. It is silly and outrageous, but the consequences for ignoring silly things can sometimes be terrible.”
<desc>: Elithora picks up the 1970 photo and holds it arm’s length, squinting. “So what are we doing about her?”
<thomamelas>: Takes a moment to rub his temple, is going to end up in a duel arcade if people keep saying he’s going to join the free council. Would very much apply the Mysterium, or the Silver Ladder first. “I can think of a solution but doing so would be open war.”
<jacobkosh>: “What would that be?” Minerva asks, blinking through her glasses.
<misteranthropy>: Sinon stands up and walks to a window.
<ell>: “tch” Aurelia rolls her eyes. “I get enough politics in my life without this added layer.”
<ell>: “Open war like fighting in the streets, reality ripping free and monsters pouring from the Abyss open war?”
<thomamelas>: Sets down the tumbler then looks at Minvera with a look of disbelief. As if one of his students had asked why Germany won the war. “Something like that. I think both sides would respect the Veil at first. Perhaps the Consilium would withdraw to Seattle before it got that bad.”
<jacobkosh>: Minerva holds her hand out. “What was this solution you mentioned, Blackjack?”
<ell>: “To the US? Really?” Aurelia sounds alarmed.
<thomamelas>: “A likely impossible one. Forget I mentioned it.” Waves his hand dismissively. Getting up and walking over to Sinon. The expression on his face a question, if she could be even be found.
<misteranthropy>: “Since none of us are arch masters of time, I can only think of a few possible actions. None are pretty.”
<jacobkosh>: Minerva nods. “I believe that a solution may be found in Saguenay. The lost civilization had artifacts – knowledge – a stronger connection to the Realms Above than we enjoy today. And one other thing; it exists outside of the normal streams of Time, now. You see? No prophecy can foretell it.”
<ell>: “So we hole up in some ancient ruin?”
<misteranthropy>: “We escalate? Mutualy assured destruction?”
<jacobkosh>: “If it comes to that, perhaps. But I am more optimistic. I believe it will have the knowledge we need to fight back.”
<thomamelas>: “No. I belive she expects to find something there to give us an edge. I mean no offense to the counciler but that is a long shot hope. I will do what I can to help, but a secondary plan may be in order.” Shakes his head.
<ell>: “So what’s the fallback for the fallback?”
<jacobkosh>: She sets her drink on the bar. “Perhaps it is a long shot, monsieur. But whether it turns the tide or not, consider what would happen if the Seers beat us to it. If they consolidate power over every city between Alaska and Montreal, between here and San Francisco.”
<jacobkosh>: “If we cannot have Saguenay, I would at least deny it to Milady.”
<desc>: “It really exists outside of normal Time streams?”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon looks back over his shoulder. “Agreed.”
<thomamelas>: “On that point we all agree.”
<ell>: Aurelia nods
<jacobkosh>: She nods at Elithora. “So we have come to believe. The hints and clues the Archmasters deign to share with us tell us that history is ever in flux. Events and places and people are erased by changing the past, but exist in a kind of suspension, ready to return if things change again.”
<desc>: Elithora listens, sets her drinks down, sits back down, and crosses her arms. “Then the bitch can’t have it. I want to see this place.”
<ell>: “Amen sister!”
<ell>: Aurelia has finished her drink
<jacobkosh>: Minerva smiles. "Spoken like a true academic. And that brings me at last to the point of this excursion. We require the map. Your search for it proved to be much more complicated than anyone had guessed. And if the Seers has it, that puts us, as they say, ‘under the clock.’ I think it is time to take it from them.
<jacobkosh>: “There is one problem. Sacerdote and Khatsalano have forbidden direct action against the Seers. They think it would be, uh, teasing the hornet’s nest.”
<jacobkosh>: “So if there is a way to sobtain the map without provoking them…?” she shrugs. “Your cabal has proven deft at such matters.”
<misteranthropy>: “Being detected /would/ mean an escalation in hostilities.” Sinon turns and sets down his finished drink.
<misteranthropy>: (“Fire. 23 dead zombies. Odd definition of deft.”)
<ell>: “So we don’t get detected. Simple”
<thomamelas>: Looks at Sinon then shrugs. “Better to ask forgiveness then permission perhaps?”
<desc>: Eli nods in agreement.
<thomamelas>: (That’s because I didn’t go with plan B.)
<misteranthropy>: “We’re expected to show initiative. At least in other consillia.”
<jacobkosh>: Minerva nods. “If you succeed, the entire council would have no choice but to laud you for helping the cause of research and denying the Seers a tool.”
<jacobkosh>: “If you fail…well, we will not dwell on that.”
<ell>: “I hope we can still be friends?”
<thomamelas>: Looks at Aurelia and Elithora “You two are going to look for that city no matter what, are you not?”
<desc>: “We are not going to fail. We’re zeroing in on its location.”
<misteranthropy>: “It’s hard to be friends with ghosts if you are not a Moros, Aurelia.”
<desc>: “And yes, we are.”
<jacobkosh>: Minerva pulls out a phone. “Then I thank you, and bid you au revoir. Oh, one last thing – Christophe gave the Guardians who came to speak to him the slip after you found him. He sent me a message. He finds your cabal….‘interesting.’ I have no idea what this means, but I’m sure we will find out soon, yes? Good day.” She bows, and vanishes.
<thomamelas>: Takes a moment to ponder that answer. “I was sent here from Boston with the express instructions to keep an eye on the Mysterium and provide assistance. That sounds like an order to go to me.”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon looks down at his watch and back up at the rest of the cabal. “Sounds like we need to get to work.”
<jacobkosh>: and boom
<jacobkosh>: that’s where we shall leave it
<jacobkosh>: if you guys get ideas of where you’d like to begin over the next week, let me know. this is going to be pretty open-ended.
<desc>: step 1. fuck seers
<desc>: step 2. get money
<jacobkosh>: and you can run down other business as well. we’re transitioning to a more sandbox mode here
<thomamelas>: Right. So the plan is to break into the most highly secure location the seers have. Steal a map. Replace it with an excellent copy when we haven’t seen it. And then get out. All without being seen.
<desc>: I am getting Ideas about what Elithora would want with a Time City.
<desc>: yeah easy
<desc>: if solid snake can do it we can do it
<misteranthropy>: we just need some wigs and a bad foreign accent
<misteranthropy>: like that worked in 90% of all alias episodes
<thomamelas>: “I am zee UPS guy.”
<ell>: I have a zombie we can use!
<jacobkosh>: I’m going to be sidequesting Sinon thursday night, if anybody else would like in, definitely be there! there may be vampires
<jacobkosh>: just putting that out there
<desc>: o i c
<misteranthropy>: yes, anyone is welcome
<thomamelas>: I’m totally down for vampires.
<ell>: also desc
<ell>: desc desc desc
<misteranthropy>: cause, life doesn’t do much against dead things
<ell>: Eli has yet to say anything to Aurie!
<thomamelas>: And Jacob, I think at some point BJ is going to ask Friday out for coffee.
<ell>: also also we kind of skipped over the FC afterparty
<desc>: man they need to sidequest and have talks
<ell>: yes we def need to do that
<misteranthropy>: i am now picturing the rest of the group spying onbj and friday having coffee
<desc>: time magic to slow time as the telephoto lens comes out
<desc>: fuuuu I want my 4th time dot when we go in hard on the seers
<jacobkosh>: oh btw
<jacobkosh>: I updated the xp page
<jacobkosh>: so it should be current for everybody
<thomamelas>: All boy prep schools, West Point, Iraq…I mean bring pop corn cause it’s going to be very awkward.
<misteranthropy>: all of the surveillance equipment loaded in a Blendin Plumbing van
<shivahn>: Thanks for letting me watch!
<jacobkosh>: OH MY GOD IT’S SHIVAHN
<jacobkosh>: hahaha I didn’t even see you there!
<thomamelas>: Hey Shivahn
<desc>: shiv this was like barely even warmup for us
<desc>: you have to see us going in that ass
<shivahn>: Haha. As in real life, I am pretty quiet.
<shivahn>: Hey Thom!
<jacobkosh>: so, okay
<thomamelas>: Hey Jacob, Power Puppies is reading the RPG.net thread.
<jacobkosh>: on the agenda, we have BJ’s coffee, Free Council party
<jacobkosh>: Aurelia’s zombie is definitely needing addressed
<jacobkosh>: wat else?
<jacobkosh>: also, that is rad, thom
<misteranthropy>: simon will be enlisting some people’s help in trying to discreetly locate an annulity.
<ell>: Aurie’s V-card, preferably in conjunction with something else
<desc>: I want to hook her up with the starlet still
<misteranthropy>: got to investigate those other guardians at some point. still thinking of how things should turn/twist once the macguffin is found.
<ell>: PARTY WILL BE THAT
<jacobkosh>: oooh kk
<desc>: elithora needs to finish her babby sidequest, that’s about it for her right now
<jacobkosh>: what is the annulity for?
<desc>: timecity will be something good to sink the fangs into.
<jacobkosh>: and yeah what exactly happened to elithora in seattle?
<jacobkosh>: also also
<jacobkosh>: I have kept the door open for a fifth
<jacobkosh>: a couple people have expressed interest
<jacobkosh>: we will see
<ell>: Also need to do some post-that-stuff goetic self-discovery
<misteranthropy>: well. going to need to question another mage with more mind than simon has…
<jacobkosh>: ah hah, yes
<misteranthropy>: so it might help to do that someplace where the advantage is lessened
<desc>: seattle so far: elithora is not a ninja
<desc>: part 2: ?
<jacobkosh>: man this is rad. the first session it was like go here, do stuff, and now you guys have enough ideas for the next six stories
<ell>: You need the help of a mindy-person? cause I’m down for that
<thomamelas>: BJ has the person from his past popping up.
<jacobkosh>: ohh yes
<misteranthropy>: yeah. sinon just isn’t sure about letting /everyone/ know about the potential corrupt guardians with a profane urim thing.
<jacobkosh>: this will of course happen with friday around, thom
<jacobkosh>: i mean I can’t not have it work out that way
<thomamelas>: Yeah, I kind of figured.
<jacobkosh>: your blond rebecca de mornay WASP meets the orthodox jew
<jacobkosh>: I mean that is just perfect
<misteranthropy>: it needs to be all david lynch-y with the blonde/brunette thing
<jacobkosh>: if they touch, it will produce 9999 mana as both are destroyed
<jacobkosh>: yessssss everything needs to be david lynch-y anyway
<thomamelas>: BJ just muttering under his breath “Existance is war. Existance is war.”
<jacobkosh>: and that reminds me, there is still the matter of the owls
<ell>: the dream owls?
<jacobkosh>: they have visited elithora and you. who’s next?
<thomamelas>: BJ could use a creepy vistor.
<jacobkosh>: what do they want? how do owls even talk?? shit’s cray
<jacobkosh>: yeah, a BJ dream might be interesting!
<jacobkosh>: and the cool thing is, pretty soon Aurelia will be able to just haxxor into your dreams and figure them out for you if you want
<jacobkosh>: and cure your smoking or whatever
<desc>: yeah the owls are a cool lingering mystery. hmm.
<ell>: shivahn you should read the rpgnet thread
<shivahn>: Sure thing! Do you have a link handy?
<thomamelas>: Talking owls. I mean compared to rampaging abyss monsters, how bad could they be?
<misteranthropy>: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?678359-Mage-the-Awakening-At-the-Edge-of-All-Thingsokay. i need to get to bed. see you thursday! g’night.
<jacobkosh>: also, shivahn, if you read it and like it, you should totally post in it
<jacobkosh>: we are getting so many readers and nobody has said anything yet
<jacobkosh>: it weirds me out! i’m all oh god they hate us
<misteranthropy>: grr. link messed up.
<jacobkosh>: I mean not really
<jacobkosh>: but sort of
<shivahn>: I somehow doubt it. You guys are pretty cool.
