Raw Log - Elithora Sidequest 2

Elithora: 6 regular xp 2 arcane xp
Goldman: 1 regular xp

<jake2099>: Last time (a while ago :P) you were sent to Seattle to contact a mage named Kerwin, somewhat famously reclusive, and hopefully get him to translate some runes the Mysterium had dug up in British Columbia.

  • Ell is now known as cyberkitties
  • jake2099 is now known as Neurohamster
    <desc>: suddenly
<neurohamster>: Speaking to someone at the cultural center he works at, you discovered that someone else was also trying to find him at the same time. Checking into a hotel, your room was broken into by a Sentinel named Fresh, who had been asked by Kerwin to investigate you, because the latter has received an omen that he might die today.
<desc>: 80s Saturday Morning Cartoon Cyberpunk Campaign
    <neurohamster>: (oh my god)
    <neurohamster>: (yes)
<desc>: (muppet babies, but more wetworks and street knowledge)
    <desc>: (anyway)
<ppups>: (sentinels are like agents of the consilium?)
    <neurohamster>: (yeah, like magic cops)
<neurohamster>: (or bailiffs. they track down renegade mages, arrest people, look for evidence, etc etc)
<neurohamster>: And pups, we will say that Fresh is a member of your cabal and you are in his car outside!
    <neurohamster>: or your car
    <neurohamster>: the cabal car
<ppups>: so is the state of mage society in seattle right now
    <ppups>: pretty normal?
<neurohamster>: Yeah. Seattle’s less beleaguered than Vancouver and has a reputation for being more laid-back, less old-timey and uptight. Some of that is because the tech boom has brought a lot of Free Council and Mysterium types to the city.
<ppups>: dude who is driving the car
    <ppups>: fresh or goldman?
<neurohamster>: Vancouver mages have a reputation of being stuffy and by the book in Seattle, and conversely they think of you guys (in very general terms) as easy-living hippies.
<neurohamster>: Who would you prefer it to be? You have stunt driving so it could totally be you if you want
    <ppups>: i dont think i do anymore
    <neurohamster>: ohhh ok
<ppups>: at some point i should really do a final look through on what my sheet says
<ppups>: anyway, i should be driving
    <neurohamster>: ok!
<ppups>: and we should be driving my bmw
    <ppups>: !!!
    <neurohamster>: hell yes
<ppups>: no cabal cars when its my turn to drive
<neurohamster>: Desc, Fresh is looking at Elithora a bit confusedly. “I…hm. You don’t really seem like the assassin type, but Kerwin takes this stuff pretty seriously.” He pats a bulge underneath his jacket. “I’m not trying to be a tough guy here, but why don’t you come with my partner and me and we’ll try and get this sorted out.”
<ppups>: (good thing he’s not trying to be a tough guy)
<cyberkitties>: (I keep my sheet open when playing)
<ppups>: (nobody can look tough and confused at the same time)
<ppups>: (i am currently opening errybody’s sheets and the mage pdf
<ppups>: now that i have customized the colors in mirc
    <ppups>: )
  • cyberkitties is now known as ckits
    <ppups>: (ohmygosh copycat)
    <ppups>: (wat da fuq)
<desc>: Elithora frowns and slips her shoes back on. She gathers up her purse. “You’re the one with the gun. Lead the way.”
  • ckits is now known as Ell
<neurohamster>: He opens the suite door for you and lets you out first, following a few paces behind. “Just down the stairs here and out through the lobby. We’re right up front.”
<ppups>: (i do not have stunt driving… i sacrificed it for starting gnosis)
<desc>: Elithora heads out the front entrance and looks around.
<desc>: (pups I am going to make a stunt drive rote soon so nbd)
<ppups>: (what i would never have pegged eli for a showoff)
<desc>: (it would be more a desperation move than dukes of hazzard)
<neurohamster>: Ppups! You see your cabal-mate Fresh coming out of the Sheraton lobby. Fresh is a sheriff’s deputy from rural Washington; he tends to dress pretty Pac Northwest blue-collar, jeans and stocking cap and so forth. You know him to be a good kid, solid, friendly and reliable if a bit unimaginative.
<ppups>: When Goldman sees Fresh come out the front door, she pulls up to the front door of the hotel.
<neurohamster>: He’s accompanied by a woman you don’t know. Desc, describe this woman!
    <ppups>: (DO IT NAOW)
    <thomamelas>: (Do it!)
<desc>: She’s caucasian, average height. Late 30s. She has a slim, un-curvy build and wild curls of black hair. She’s striking looking moreso than generically pretty. She’s wearing a simple, dark-colored dress, sensible and somewhat cute shoes, clutching a purse, and looking irritated.
<neurohamster>: Fresh nods at the car’s approach. “Here we go.” He opens the passenger door, then reaches in and opens the rear door. “Back seat, and I’ll keep an eye on you from up front.”
<desc>: Elithora gets into the back seat. “Quite.”
<ppups>: Goldman reaches back to shake the newcomer’s hand. “Goldman. Moros mage of the Silver Ladder. Nice to meet you, …?”
<ppups>: To Fresh: “she seeing Kerwin?”
<neurohamster>: He nods. “She says she’s here to have him look at a book or something, but someone else was looking for him too. I dunno.”
<desc>: Elithora gives Goldman’s hand a suspicious shake. “Savant Elithora of the Mysterium. To what do I owe this afternoon’s semi-kidnapping?”
<ppups>: Goldman gives Fresh a look. “Kidnapping? Really?”
<neurohamster>: “He tells hs he thinks he’s gonna be murdered today, and two strangers show up in town looking for him. I figure the best thing for us to do is get them where we can keep an eye on them and decide where to go from there.”
    <neurohamster>: *tells us, rather
<ppups>: Goldman’s a yuppie in her late twenties. A snappy dresser who would look more at home in New York City than Seattle. Smiles a lot. Short blonde hair.
    <ppups>: “Not sure I agree, but…”
<ppups>: To Elithora: “If you were looking for Kerwin anyway, it’s alright with me.”
<ppups>: She turns her attention to the road and leaves the hotel.
<desc>: “The Mysterium is looking for him; I’m just the messenger.”
<ppups>: Without looking: “Well, if you’d prefer, I’m sure we can pass the message along for you. Want me to turn around?”
<desc>: "I’d prefer to get his translations in person. Where are we going?
    <ppups>: (good question!)
<neurohamster>: Fresh’s phone rings. He answers. “Yes? Yeah, I’ve got her right here, why….oh. What?! We need to…oh. Oh. Are you sure? Well, I think we…look, why don’t Goldman and I meet up with you. Yeah, we’ll see you in a few.” He hangs up.
<neurohamster>: He narrows his eyes. “That was Kerwin. The other mage looking for him found him. It’s Orchid, his ex-wife. She’s at his Sanctum now. So we’re down to one stranger looking for him.”
    <ppups>: (meaning Eli?)
<ppups>: (also do I know about Kerwin’s relationship with Orchid? Is it out of the question that she would be the danger?)
<neurohamster>: (yeah, he means Eli. And yes, you’ve heard of Orchid. She’s a member of the Seattle Consilium in good standing; they’ve been divorced for like ten years but stay in touch because they work in similar fields, so it’s unlikely she has some kind of sudden vendetta. On the other hand, you have this stranger who claims to be from another city….)
<ppups>: (right, just checking. And to answer desc’s query, where are we going?)
<neurohamster>: Fresh looks at Goldman. “Kerwin, his wife, and a couple other Sentinels – Echidna and Boone – are at his place. He suggested we bring the lady there and get this sorted out one way or the other.”
<ppups>: “Sounds good. Elithora, you seem on the level to me. Sorry about the inconvenience… just bad timing.”
<ppups>: As she drives, she tries to make conversation, asking Elithora what Vancouver’s like, what she thinks of Seattle, etc.
<desc>: Elithora replies with smooth if not yet entirely trusting chit-chat. Vancouver is more chaotic for Mages than one would expect; her cabal has been thrust into the limelight quicker than anticipated; she hears that the food in Seattle is noteworthy.
<neurohamster>: Kerwin’s place is located on Mercer Island, a large house – almost a mansion – with a circle drive. He’s one of the types who seem to have spun gold from the straw of academic and nonprofit work – probably sits on a lot of boards. There are several cars in the drive already, one, a Trans Am, somewhat out of place.
<thomamelas>: (Trans Ams are always out of place.)
    <ppups>: (haha nice)
    <neurohamster>: (hahahaha)
    <thomamelas>: (Except Biden’s Trans Am.)
    <neurohamster>: (strongly agree)
<ppups>: Goldman parks and gets out of the car, but waits for the others before heading to the front door.
<desc>: Elithora follows Goldman to the house.
<neurohamster>: Fresh follows behind the ladies. Your little band is met at the front door by Echidna, a mid-30s Greek woman in jeans, t-shirt, and denim jacket. Her eyes flutter as she casts a rote. “Okay, Fresh is the only one of you three with a weapon. Who’s our mysterious visitor?”
<ppups>: (wtf we are mages how dare she dismiss us for not having weapons. Tempted to turn fresh’s gun into a marshmallow)
<desc>: “Elithora, Savant of the Vancouver Mysterium.”
<ppups>: (ugggggh quizzy is talking about board games and i disagree with it all)
<ppups>: (he is the wrongest tonight)
    <ell>: (what?)
<neurohamster>: She opens the door and leads you inside. The interior is absolutely covered in framed paintings, drawings, and tchotchke cases holding little carvings and sculptures. Everything seems strongly themed around Asian, Pacific, and pre-Columbian art.
<ppups>: (I like things he doesn’t and he seems too competitive for me to enjoy anything)
<desc>: Elithora only makes it halfway through the first room before apparently forgetting why she’s here. Her eyes are wide as she takes in the sheer profusion of old, rare stuff.
<ppups>: Goldman’s surprised to see someone share Kerwin’s interest – it’s all so much window dressing to her.
<ppups>: “I take it you’re an art buff?”
<neurohamster>: There are voices coming from a sitting room to the side. Goldman recognizes them as Orchid and Boone, another Sentinel. “Look, /obviously/ I’m not here to kill my ex-husband. I told you, I need a second opinion on an artifact I found on the dig out in the Aleutians and he, like it or not, is the only one remotely qualified to…”
<desc>: Elithora takes a long moment to answer. “I suppose, I … is that Malaysian authentic?”
<neurohamster>: “That’s not the issue, ma’am. We’ve got reason to believe that your husband’s life is in jeopardy and….you okay up there, Echidna?”
<desc>: She snaps herself out of the reverie and follows into the next room.
<ell>: (He isn’t really being like “this is bad” except about tabletop where he is being silly because ffs everyone gets rules wrong and then learns they did)
<neurohamster>: Echidna hollers forward. “Fresh and his cabal mate brought our other suspect.”
<ppups>: “We’re good here. This is Elithora from Seattle. She’s also looking for a consult.”
<ell>: (unless you are talking about deception being bad in board games in whioch case I say never play Diplomacy. Especially not with me)
<ppups>: (I would be mad if someone lied during a settlers of catan game, and I think the betrayal rule in Rex helps prevent broken alliances from forming every game.)
<neurohamster>: The four of you step into the sitting room. Orchid is in her mid-forties, a thin woman gone mildly plump in a few places, with big glasses under short, spiky black hair. She’s wearing pants and a blouse under a long coat, and sensible shoes, like someone accustomed to being on her feet a lot.
<desc>: Elithora assesses the room. “Kerwin is quite the popular fellow today.”
<ppups>: (I love deception in some games and dislike it in others. Diplomacy’s legit, and I don’t really trust anyone (though I don’t lie myself). In Settlers there’s no opportunity for super-awesome deception so I’d rather play with none.)
<neurohamster>: Boone is dark-skinned and dressed in a white shirt and black jeans, with boots underneath. His hair is pulled back in a ponytail. (very Lorenzo Lamas)
<thomamelas>: (Only you would make a Lorenzo Lamas NPC.)
    <neurohamster>: (…..yeah I’ll cop to that)
<neurohamster>: “Goldman. Fresh. /Ma’am./” He looks Elithora up and down for a long moment before his mouth twists into an “S”.
<ppups>: (but yeah we played like 15 games of chaos before we learned how adjacency actually works in that game)
<neurohamster>: Orchid looks at Elithora with naked skepticism. “And who are you? Some kind of Seer? A Banisher? He’s going half out of his mind worrying you want to kill him.”
    <ell>: (chaos?)
<ppups>: “Classy, Orchid. Convict her before she opens her mouth.”
<ppups>: “Do we really think the person trying to kill Kerwin’s going to politely announce themselves and wait for us to pick them up?”
<ppups>: (Chaos in the Old World)
<desc>: “I’m here on a Mysterium errand and if someone were supposed to be dead, I’m not the member of my cabal they would have sent.”
<desc>: Elithora pats her purse. “I was sent down to sniff him out for a translation on runes that aren’t really in our wheelhouse in Vancouver. Clearly I picked an inopportune time.”
<desc>: “But, now that I’m here: what’s all this murder-fate business?”
<ell>: (oh, CitOW. How does adjacency work)
<neurohamster>: Boone shrugs. “The professor tossed the bones and they came up saying he might die today ‘by violence.’ Then he got a couple calls at work from people wanting to talk to him, and he went into panic mode. Called us in.”
<ppups>: (we thought it went according to the arrows, so if two lands didn’t have an arrow leading from one to the other, the lands weren’t adjacent. The effect was to make the map mechanically equialent to a line. It’s actually supposed to be like a normal map, which makes it much easier to traverse. Apparently like half the people that play it make the same mistake we did.)
<neurohamster>: Echidna pipes up. “I’ve already scanned Orchid’s mind, with her consent, and found no murderous intent. That leaves either the newcomer here, or one of us, or some other party.”
<ell>: (ah. Yeah, the arrows just indicate the order of resolution)
<ppups>: (I guess it became a big thing when those online board game sites first came out… people would try to play chaos and argue over that rule)
<neurohamster>: Fresh turns to Elithora. “You willing to let her take a look?”
<ppups>: Goldman touches Eli’s arm. “I certainly understand if you’re not, but I can vouch for Echidna. She’s very conscientious.”
    <ppups>: “and careful.”
<desc>: Elithora untenses her shoulders. “If I must. I have nothing to hide.”
<neurohamster>: Echidna nods. “I’ll be very careful.” She steps up and brushes her forefingers on Elithora’s brow, murmuring softly.

<neurohamster>: Boone returns a few moments later with a thin, gawkily-built middle-aged man in thick black glasses and a blue blazer over a t-shirt and jeans, his hair a messy shock of white. He blinks nervously as Boone leads him into the room.
<ppups>: (I’m not sure we have desc)
<neurohamster>: “Here are your visitors, professor. You know Ms. Orchid, and Ms. Elithora here is from Vancouver. We’ve scanned her and she’s clean. I think it’s possible your spell last night maybe went off wrong, or something.”
    <neurohamster>: dang yeah
    <desc>: testing

    <ppups>: “Are you armored?”
<neurohamster>: He nods, head bobbing like a bird’s. He seems to have trouble standing still, always looking around. “Yes…yes….but I don’t understand, the spell suggested it would be a visitor that did it to me.”
<desc>: (manipulation + empathy. he’s an older man who thought we were coming to kill him. I want a sprinkle of cinnamon to start warming him back up.)

    <critical>: desc, 5d10h8: 2 [5d10h8=9,2,7,[10,7],7]
<ppups>: “Perhaps there’s a third visitor on the way.”
<neurohamster>: He nods. “M – maybe, yes. Maybe that’s it.”
<desc>: Elithora gives Kerwin an encouraging smile. “How did you read this, exactly? Could you tell us anything about the warning itself?”
<neurohamster>: He smiles at Elithora warmly and seems to relax a bit at the same time as Orchid frowns. desc, looking at her dark spikes of hair, you become uncomfortably aware of the possibility that he has a type.
    <ppups>: (hahahahahaha yes)
<neurohamster>: “Why…that’s a good question. Get to the root of it, yes, reexamine the language. I performed a Time rote taught to me by a Samoyed shaman, and it said I would have a caller in my immediate future, and they would ‘bring my death.’”
<thomamelas>: (Man, that would just make me turn my cell phone off.)
    <neurohamster>: (hahahaha)
<neurohamster>: “So I locked myself in my study, cast some wards, and asked the Sentinels to monitor my voicemail at work for anyone asking after me.”
<ppups>: (Goldman is very confused by this guy’s response… Go to the airport, pick the third destination on the board, and fly there for a week. problem; solution.)
<ppups>: (yes, well done, why did you come out D
<neurohamster>: (he has a reputation as an agoraphobe and a homebody. he attends consilium maybe once a year)
<neurohamster>: (you strongly suspect the Sentinels came here kind of as an indulgence of an eccentric wizard’s whim rather than any real concern as such)
<ppups>: (adjusting Goldman’s attitude in response to receipt of new information re: this dork)
    <ppups>: (beep boop)
<desc>: “Well that would certainly give me pause, too! I don’t have any gruesome deaths to bring you, just some runes. I wonder if this warning had a less direct meaning, perhaps? Something more symbolic?”
<ppups>: “Is it possible the runes are dangerous? Or the artifact Orchid found?”
<ppups>: Goldman turns to Orchid. “Did you bring it with you?”
<neurohamster>: She nods. “Yes, I have it right here. It’s of strictly academic importance, really, just a bronze working…” She pulls something from her purse – it looks like a bracelet, a bangle almost, made of dull bronze and worked to look like a snake swallowing its tail.
    <ppups>: (wtf nooooooooooooooo)
    <ppups>: (hold a moment)
<ppups>: (I wanna know if I can transmute it)
    <neurohamster>: (sure thing)
<neurohamster>: You should be able to transmute bronze, yes.
<ppups>: “Wait!” Goldman holds up a hand. When Orchid pulls it from her purse, Goldman attempts to transmute the object.
<ppups>: (okay so matter 4 plus gnosis 2 for an improvised cast in a primary arcanum?)

<ppups>: “That’s not bronze! Professor, you may want to return to your study.”
<neurohamster>: He begins backing away. Puppies, you can make an intelligence + matter arcana roll to try and ascertain what kind of metal it is.

<neurohamster>: This is made of Sacralium – it’s Perfected bronze. (The Perfected metals and alloys are made by taking ordinary metal and moving it back and forth into and out of Twilight until it becomes its own Platonic ideal form.)
<ppups>: (so was there no paradox roll for the transmute because it fizzled?)
    <neurohamster>: yeah
<neurohamster>: Also I generally don’t call for Paradox rolls when there’s time to prepare and no sleepers around. It keeps things moving faster
    <ppups>: (all one piece?)
    <neurohamster>: Yep
<ppups>: I’ll look at it with Mage Sight, too
    <neurohamster>: Matter or Death sight?
    <neurohamster>: or something else?
    <neurohamster>: spirit sight?
    <ppups>: Matter
<ppups>: boo to spirit sight… gotta spend mana for that

    <neurohamster>: Bam! Okay
<neurohamster>: This bangle has been enchanted. There’s resonance here – this bangle is enchanted, and you can tell the enchantment activates when someone wears it.
<ppups>: “That’s perfected bronze, enchanted to do something when worn.”
<ppups>: “What it does is beyond my expertise.”
<neurohamster>: (did we lose desc-sama again)
    <neurohamster>: (desc)
<desc>: Elithora looks surprised. “What’s the provenance on this, again? You found it in a dig?”
<neurohamster>: She nods, somewhat uncertainly now that everyone is focusing on it. “Y…yes, in the Aleutian Islands. It wasn’t an Awakened project, it was my Sleeper colleagues and I….I thought Fre – Kerwin might be able to help me shed light on its origins.”
<ppups>: Goldman addresses Kerwin: “Your fate reading concerns me, but something doesn’t add up. Would you have been likely to wear the bracelet as part of your examination?”
<neurohamster>: He scratches the back of his neck. “I…I don’t think so, no..I mean, I get a bit absentminded sometimes….”
<neurohamster>: Orchid laughs mirthlessly. “He means ‘a lot’ and ‘all the time.’”
<ppups>: “I only awakened about a year ago. Is there protocol for a situation like this? Some way to discern the nature of the enchantment and of the bangle itself?”
<desc>: “There are ways to unveil what it does, although I’m not your girl for that one. Personally, I would bring the item to Seattle’s council to assess.”
<desc>: “I mean, we’ve all dug up lethal, soul-absorbing relics from digs before so it’s not like it’s that unusual.”
<ppups>: Goldman chuckles. “Speak for yourself. I’m a city girl.”
<neurohamster>: Kerwin nods. “A…an Obrimos would be the person to ask, I…I imagine. But if, if, if it was going to kill me, Goldman, you could see that with your, with your Grim Sight.”
    <neurohamster>: (or fate sight!)
<desc>: (I was kind of wondering this but it seemed like it would have to be “will this kill homey?” I was going to a do a fate read on him but wanted to see the transmute in action.)
<ppups>: “I’ll take a look, but I’m not as well versed in Death as in Matter. If I don’t see anything, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing there.”
    <ppups>: 4d10h8 Grim Sight
    <critical>: ppups, Grim Sight: 3 [4d10h8=8,4,[10,6],9]
<neurohamster>: (the transmute was an interesting call. I had to look up the properties of perfected bronze)
<neurohamster>: Death hangs over this thing STRONGLY, in the way it does around murder weapons, cemeteries, and popular suicide spots.
<neurohamster>: It has been involved in multiple deaths and has the potential to be so again.
<ppups>: “Okay, get that thing the hell out of here. It reeks of death.”
<desc>: Elithora’s curiousity is fully piqued. “Oh interesting.”
<neurohamster>: Orchid goes white. “Um….” she drops it gingerly to the floor from nerveless fingers. “Oh my. I had no idea, I really didn’t….oh my…”
<ppups>: (Stupid arcane objects. I can’t disintegrate it)
<neurohamster>: The bangle bounces off the thick rug once and then rolls to a stop.
<ppups>: “How could you? I wasn’t even going to give it a second look. I’d say the professor made a good call reading his fate last night.”
<desc>: Elithora kneels down next to it. “If you’ve been handling it thus far and some grad student had to carefully clean it and neither of you are dead yet, there might be more to it than all that.”
<neurohamster>: Orchid sinks into the nearby loveseat. “I…well, I’m sorry, Kerwin. I was sloppy.”
<ell>: (go go Eli! Mysterium deadly artifacts squad!)
    <neurohamster>: ( :D )
<desc>: Elithora waves dismissively. “Better than leaving it lost forever.”
<desc>: (also eli totally meant it re: who hasn’t dug up a horror from the past? let’s not be judgmental. you guys should have seen the scepter in prague. no one checked carefully and we left it in a padded envelope for a week! ha! well, live and learn.)
<neurohamster>: Do you want to spend a little bit poking and prodding at it with the help of the other mages in the room>
    <neurohamster>: ?
<desc>: “Sir, does the design itself tell you anything?” (to Kerwin, since this is one of his areas of expertise.)
<ppups>: Goldman’s disturbed by it, but she’d be more likely to suffer in silence than cause a scene if the others want to take a look.
<thomamelas>: (And now the odds on which Cabal member gets BJ killed have just shifted signifgantly.)
<desc>: Before she puts her peepers on, Eli is analyzing it from a general occult angle. What does it bring to mind …
    <desc>: 6d10h8
    <critical>: desc, 6d10h8: 4 [6d10h8=2,9,8,2,8,9]
<ppups>: (ooooh is there a pool? Can I get in on this?)
<desc>: “You know what this reminds me a bit of …”
<desc>: wait occult is a mysterium speciality! I have never once remembered the bonus die.
    <desc>: 1d10h8
<neurohamster>: Kerwin seems to sharpen a bit as he kneels down next to Elithora and looks at it. “The first thing that strikes me is that there are no reptiles in Alaska or the Aleutian Islands. This came from somewhere else…”
    <critical>: desc, 1d10h8: 0 [1d10h8=2]
<ppups>: (oh he think he fancy)
<neurohamster>: Desc, this reminds you of the ornamentation of Mediterranean mystery cults much more than anything you know about Pacific Northwestern spiritual practices.
<ppups>: (goldman gets high score on iphone solitaire)
    <neurohamster>: (hahahha)
<desc>: “Oh now that is a clever point. I wish I had my books on Proto-Eleusian spellcasting reconstructions, because it has some telltale earmarks of that style.”
<desc>: Elithora points out the surface finishing technique to Kerwin. “Note the anterior edges here.”
<neurohamster>: Ppupps, Fresh and the other Sentinels kind of join you in watching the two nerds with a strange mixture of wariness, disbelief, and resignation.
<ppups>: Goldman’s trying to decide wehther this is more or less painful than the dinner at the italian restaurant from which she Awakened.
<ppups>: Right now she’s leaning toward this being more pleasant.
<desc>: Elithora is steadily getting more animated. “Wouldn’t you love to know how it got all the way here? It must have the most fascinatingly blood-soaked history, don’t you think?”
    <neurohamster>: (oh cool, okay)
<ppups>: (I have a huge grin on my face you guys. You don’t even know.)
    <ppups>: (so hilarious)
<neurohamster>: Kerwin nods excitedly. “Yes! Depending on how we date it, it could make us entirely rethink our picture of antediluvian trade! Or it could hail from another timeline entirely.” He looks at Elithora, a grin spreading across his face. “Let’s go with Orchid back to the Aleutians! Right now! I’ve neglected my field work for too long!”
    <ppups>: (olol)
<ppups>: Goldman’s keeping the smile off her face, but it’s a struggle.
<neurohamster>: Orchid is looking at Kerwin and Elithora and making a :c face hard
<desc>: Elithora fishes a pen out of her purse and picks up the bracelet, setting it gingerly on the nearest table. “Oh, I wish I could, honestly. It’s been … a number of years since I’ve done proper fieldwork, actually.”
<ppups>: (Orchid is not having a good night )
    <neurohamster>: (hahaha for reals)
<desc>: Elithora pauses, doing mental math and looking dismayed. She dismisses whatever is going through her head and continues to Kerwin, “Isn’t this always the way? The best finds are right under your nose, looking like something trivial?”
<neurohamster>: “Indeed.” He looks up from the floor at Orchid in the loveseat. “You really found something remarkable this time. Some prudent editing and you could get a couple papers out of this with the Sleepers as well.”
<desc>: Elithora kneels next to the bracelet one more time and rotates it gently with her pen to cause the little reptiles to parade around in a ring.
<desc>: She stands. “Oh! Right. Kerwin, I don’t mean to impose just as you’ve gotten your new lease on life …”
<neurohamster>: He looks from Orchid to you confusedly for a second; you see the gears shifting behind his eyes. “Oh. Oh yes, you, you, needed something, right?”
<ell>: (grizz win. Too bad t-pups)
<neurohamster>: Boone clears his throat softly. “If it’s all right with everyone, Echidna and Fresh and I are going to take this thing to the Athenaeum now….”
<desc>: Elithora retrieves the thumb drive from her purse. “Not as exciting as this, I’m afraid: we found runes out in the boonies up north in British Columbia. Thought we might be able to sweet talk you into taking a crack at them.”
<neurohamster>: Boone nudges the bracelet into a leather drawstring bag and cinches the bag shut, nodding at everyone as he and the other Sentinels take their leave. Fresh looks to Goldman. “Oh, hey, uh, I need to go with these guys – can you give her” – he jabs a thumb over his shoulder at Elithora – “a ride back to her hotel?”
    <ppups>: “Sure. See you Thursday.”
<neurohamster>: He smiles widely. “Thanks, Goldie. Take care.”
<neurohamster>: (cats just knocked over something important sounding)
    <neurohamster>: (ugh)
<ppups>: (critical: slightly less omnipotently maleovolent than jake’s cats)
<neurohamster>: desc, he takes the thumb drive. “Ahh, yes, well, the thing is, if I’m going to be leaving for the islands, I might not have time for any projects, what with this and that….” Behind him, you see Orchid desperately trying to get your attention and mouthing “no”. Apparently she does not want him tagging along!
<neurohamster>: (go go social kung fu desc)
    <desc>: 5d10h8 manipulation+persuasion cmon cmon
<neurohamster>: what are you telling him?
    <critical>: desc, manipulation+persuasion cmon cmon: 1 [5d10h8=4,8,4,1,6]
<ppups>: (whoa eli is p sociable)
<ppups>: (its easy to forget cuz she is such a hipsternerd)
<desc>: “Ah, it’s just, they found the runes in the most unexpected place, you really wouldn’t believe the chain of events. And if we were able to get this in time for the next consilium meeting you can imagine the impact …”
<desc>: “Obviously you would get research credit and citations … and it would really mean a lot to me.”
<ppups>: (oh ho… desc uses FEMININE WILES)
<neurohamster>: He hesitates, head swiveling between you and Orchid. “Oh,” she says with a start as he looks at her, “we just got back, we’re not leaving again for some time. You definitely have time to help Elithora with her project, I mean, it’s the least we can do after almost calling her a murderer…”
<desc>: like we all haven’t had an ex we didn’t want at the dig site M I RITE
    <neurohamster>: oh ho ho!
<neurohamster>: He hesitates a bit more before looking back at Elithora. “I…well, yes, yes! We’ve, we’ve, we’ve treated you shamefully. This” – holding up the drive – “well, certainly it’s the absolute least I can do for a fellow scholar! You tell M, M, Minerva that I’ll forward my translation to her the moment it’s done.”
<neurohamster>: “In fact, I’ll start immediately!” He begins heading toward the upstairs. “Uh, thank you all so much for, for, for your help. Orchid, dear, you can show them out, can’t you?”
<desc>: “Oh, splendid! My knight in shining armor.”
    <ppups>: (gag)
    <neurohamster>: (hahaha)
<desc>: (fuk u guise he is nice and sweet and harmless and he cares about antiquities UNLIKE EVERY OTHER AWAKENED I KNOW)
<ppups>: (yeah great why dont you invite him to your nerd house and you can be nerd buddies together)
<ppups>: (strap yourself into your nerd cannon and blast off to nerd land where nerds grow on nerd trees)
<neurohamster>: Orchid releases a long, long sigh, suddenly seeming much more relaxed. “Thank you…Elithora, was it? I…apologize if I was rude earlier. And Goldman, you saved his life and maybe more. I’m glad you both were here.”
<desc>: (you guys only care about guns and disguises and fucking the most famous actresses on TV)
<ppups>: (that is SO not true)
<ppups>: (i also care about wine and promotions!)
    <neurohamster>: ( )
<thomamelas>: (That is so not true. BJ likes running too.)
    <neurohamster>: (And Sinon watches X-Files!)
<neurohamster>: (though he probably sees the Cigarette Smoking Man as the hero)
<ppups>: “Don’t worry about it… I’m just glad everything worked out. And hey, that bracelet turned out to be a major find!”
    <ppups>: (hahahaha)
<desc>: Elithora pats her reassuringly. “Occupational hazard. You should have seen how we flubbed safety protocols with the Gobi sand-glyphs. And that turned out fine! Fine-ish.”
<ppups>: (the truth is out there… WTF GO GET IT LOCK IT UP LOCK IT UP)
    <neurohamster>: (hahahhaha exactly)
<ppups>: (ell has no retort to desc’s accusations)
<neurohamster>: Orchid smiles. “I just hope I’m able to see it again. As soon as we know something’s dangerous it gets about twenty times more difficult to do work on it…oh well. I need a drink, I think.” She leads you out the front hallway.
<ppups>: “That’s not a bad idea,” agrees Goldman.
<desc>: Elithora follows out towards the entrance. “Sadly true.”
    <desc>: (dat abyssal book)
    <ppups>: (abyssal MURDERbook)
<neurohamster>: Orchid hops into an older Audi. “Good night, ladies!”
    <ppups>: “See you around.”
<neurohamster>: Do your characters want to make interesting small talk on the way back to desc’s hotel?
<ppups>: I used up all my ideas on the way to Kerwin’s
<ppups>: But both these ladies are socially competent, and Goldman likes to chat
<ppups>: so they probably talk, I just don’t know that any of it is interesting or worth actually playing through.
<ell>: (What? Like fucking actresses isn’t awesome)
    <desc>: (on E no less)
<desc>: They probably do make convo although I am not sure what the bridge is to inviting a Moros mage up to Vancouver to get in with the cabal.
    <ppups>: oh, that’s covered
    <ppups>: I’ll be imposing
<ppups>: We don’t need to forge any kind of lasting bond, as long as we worked together and got along okay and you’re the only person I know in Vancouver
    <neurohamster>: indeed
    <neurohamster>: I got dat
    <neurohamster>: covered
    Neurohamster steeples fingers
    <desc>: k
<thomamelas>: (I’m will Ell and pro sleeping with Actresses.)
<neurohamster>: Goldman returns Elithora to the Sheraton, this time in the front seat and with no guns being pointed. Desc, does Elithora stay the night in Seattle or head straight back to Vancouver?
<desc>: She stays the night and heads up in the morning after eating eggs, toast, and coffee with another coffee to go on the way back.
    <neurohamster>: Okay!
<neurohamster>: Later that day, Eli has a visitor in her office. It’s Minerva.
<desc>: Eli hastily hides her non-research-related tabs and looks semi-convincingly like she was analyzing 15th century Moros Time sphere iconography. “Oh! Hey Minerva.”
<neurohamster>: The Councilor knocks softly on the doorframe. “I’m sorry, am I interrupting anything?”
<desc>: “No, just …” She shrugs. “Looking at animated gifs of cats falling off of things, actually. What’s up?”
<neurohamster>: “I just wanted to congratulate you on your good work down in Seattle. Kerwin e-mailed me with the startings of a preliminary translation this morning. It’s excellent, as illuminating as we’d hoped. He also had high words of praise for you in particular.”
<neurohamster>: (EDITOR’S NOTE: this takes place immediately after Consilium #2 and before her visit to the sanctum, the rave, actress-boning, vampires, etc.)
<neurohamster>: (as a comic book dude I trust desc to be able to roleplay in 4 dimensions )
<desc>: Elithora doesn’t hide looking pleased. “He was a dear. Oh, you should have seen the masks in his front room. What a collection.”
<desc>: (dude I was ready to roll time spells at 3 dots this whole time, etc)
    <neurohamster>: (hee)
<desc>: “Anyway, I was glad to help. Besides, what’s the harm in us building guanxi with Seattle? We need all the friends we can get lately.”
<neurohamster>: Minerva beams. “Most people find him difficult. You have a gift for this sort of thing, I think, and you apprehend the politics of the situation precisely. Use it well and it can secure your future in our organization as well as” – she waves a hand vaguely – “out there.”
<neurohamster>: She looks at the clock on the wall. “I’m late for a consultation, but I’d like to make time to talk with your cabal soon. And with you individually. Perhaps next week?”
<desc>: “Of course: I’m at your disposal. I’m in the home stretch on the Time iconography piece for presentation, too. I’d like to run some things by you later.”
<desc>: (SETTING UP THEIR NEXT MEETING AFTER THE SANCTUM MEET UP AND COINCIDING WITH THE PENDING GIRL TALK SCENE WITH AURIE)
<desc>: (WE ARE HANDLING PUBLISHING SCHEDULES LIKE MARVEL COMICS OVER HERE BITCH)
    <neurohamster>: (fuck yes)
<neurohamster>: She smiles. “I’ll look forward to it. Toodle-oo!” She waves her fingers and moves away.
    <neurohamster>: BAM
