03[02:10] * Set by simonwolf on Sat Jul 17 19:24:49

[23:27] <jake> Thomamelas, are you around?
01[23:47] <thomamelas> I am
01[23:47] <thomamelas> Sorry, got caught up in STO.
[23:49] <jake> no worries! are you up for some sidequesting?
[23:49] <jake> django was great by the way
01[23:49] <thomamelas> I am. I figured it would be. Are we going to see the return of Don Johnson’s acting career?
[23:50] <jake> I would love that. He’s not in it for too long but he does really good work
01[23:51] <thomamelas> Cool.
[23:51] <jake> I think this is easily Tarantino’s best thing since Kill Bill
01[23:51] <thomamelas> Excellent. I will likely see it next week.
[23:52] <jake> I am super eager to hear what you think
01[23:52] <thomamelas> I’m looking forward to it.
[23:53] <jake> without going into spoilers, I was just impressed that it treated slavery with the awfulness that it deserves, but somehow didn’t lose the spaghetti fun
[23:54] <jake> it’s seriuos but not too serious
[23:54] <jake> also, there was a trailer for a new Tom Cruise sci-fi movie that looked really interesting called Oblivion that I had not heard of until now
01[23:54] <thomamelas> Excellent. The one with him as a caretaker?
[23:55] <jake> Yeah
[23:55] <jake> It looked really interesting
01[23:55] <thomamelas> He’s in two sci-fi films this summer.
[23:55] <jake> I mean it could be awful but the visuals and so forth were both cool and sci-fi but also not the usual by the numbers stuff
01[23:56] <thomamelas> It was supposed to be a graphic novel that was never finished. So I’m kinda worried it’s gonna be Winkyed.
[23:57] <jake> hahahaha
[23:57] <jake> yeah the story could be terrible, but I’ll be cautiously optimistic. cruise in sci-fi has actually had a pretty good track record
01[23:58] <thomamelas> Yeah, and I wonder if it’s a side effect of comic book movies. Their success leading to some risks on big budget sci-fi.
[23:59] <jake> I hope so! It’s been a kind of dry past few years for good sci fi. Prometheus could have helped but ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
01[23:59] <thomamelas> So I hear.
Session Time: Fri Dec 28 00:00:00 2012
[00:00] <jake> it’s almost worth seeing just for the visuals and for Fassbender’s performance, because he was apparently acting in a way better script than every other single person
[00:00] <jake> but I can’t really recommend it. I was so bored
[00:00] <jake> Anyway! I’m ready to rock
01[00:01] <thomamelas> Give me a second.
[00:02] <jake> sure thing
01[00:04] <thomamelas> Alright.
01[00:05] <thomamelas> Let us rock and or roll.
[00:05] <jake> ok! This takes place between the last Consilium meeting and the adventure the group is currently on
01[00:05] <thomamelas> k
[00:09] <jake> In your spare time, you’ve been helping to train Memoranda as part of her induction into the Adamantine Arrow. Although she’s roughly the same power level as you (her Cabal were all PC starting level dudes) you know the Arrow’s rotes and have real-world experience backing you up.
[00:10] <jake> At other times, you and her are trained as near-equals by Horatius, who is one of the senior Arrows in the city by age and apparently has absolutely no Sleeper life or hobbies at all. He lives at the gym and devotes apparently 100% of his time to either improving himself or training recruits.
[00:11] <jake> It is at one of those sessions that he suddenly calls a halt and asks you and Memoranda over.
01[00:12] <thomamelas> Is wearing sweats with Army on the front, disengaging from sparing dummy.
01[00:14] <thomamelas> Memo> Also in sweats, abiet black ones puts down the dummy knife. Heading over with BJ
[00:14] <jake> Horatius is a bald, almost completely hairless dude who is just total wiry muscle. Not cut, but just immensely fit. He seems to favor gis or other loose garments. As you approach, he bows softly.
[00:15] <jake> He seems to be in that ageless state between 45 and 65
01[00:15] <thomamelas> Returns the bow, trying not to wince in front of Memo.
01[00:15] <thomamelas> Memo> Also bows.
[00:19] <jake> Horatius’ mouth quirks in the tiniest suggestion of a smile at BJ’s bow. “You’re a hard worker, Blackjack, but I think we have wrung the sponge of your body dry enough for today. I understand your eagerness to push your own limits, but I would not want you to hurt yourself. Not when we may be called upon to serve at any time.”
[00:20] <jake> He stands taller. “…Because, as it happens, that is the case today.”
01[00:21] <thomamelas> Raises an eyebrow. “What is wrong?” subtly shifting to an at attenion posture.
[00:29] <jake> Horatius considers. "To tell the truth, I do not know the specifics. It’s some way away, however. The small town of Squamish, about an hour northeast of here. In my life /before/, I would have found it a quaint rural getaway destination, a place to escape the rat race,
[00:29] <jake> although my life – the life given to me by the Exarchs – afforded very little time for the contemplation of nature or higher things. And in my current life? When I see places like Squamish, I am reminded how very few there are of us, and how very, very many Sleepers we are responsible for.
[00:29] <jake> Anyone who Awakens in a place like that likely does so alone, and any supernatural threat that chooses to manifest does so with almost total confidence that we are not around to impede it.
[00:30] <jake> “In practice, it is us – us and a handful in Victoria – who are responsible for policing eveything between Alaska and Alberta.”
01[00:31] <thomamelas> “So we are to investigate. Do you have any details?”
[00:33] <jake> “Only this, and it is an important one: Khatsalano is there. His Shadow name is Squamish Indian, as is the man, and he has noticed something and decided this would be an adequate test of the two of your abilities.”
01[00:34] <thomamelas> Nods. “Can we call upon him in case of emergency, or should we avoid it?”
01[00:35] <thomamelas> Memo> Looks at BJ in a confused fashion, thinking that a very odd question.
[00:37] <jake> “An Arrow should be able to operate independently, but even more important is the judgment to know when to call for backup. Khatsalano would not be pleased to learn that two recruits died because they were embarrassed to ask for help. The goal here is education. He wants to see how you approach problems so he knows how best to use you in general.”
01[00:39] <thomamelas> And gets the answer he is looking for. “Alright, we will need a moment to change.” Doing mental math on how much ammo he has with him. Bows to Horatius. “Alright Memo, it is test time.”
01[00:42] <thomamelas> Memo> Follows along. “Wait, so this is a test?”
[00:43] <jake> Horatius hands you a paper on which he’s scrawled an address. “Meet the Councilor here as early as you can. He will brief you on what to do next. I’d like to say I don’t believe in luck, but the Acanthus would take issue with that, so…good luck.”
01[00:44] <thomamelas> Chuckles. “Memo, everything is a test. That is the way of the Arrow.” Taking the paper from Horatius. “Thank you. We will do our best.”
[00:48] <jake> Anything you’re doing before heading up to Squamish?
01[00:48] <thomamelas> Assume standard defensive spells prepped and a shotgun borrowed.
[00:50] <jake> Ok! So you’re spending Mana to make those spells 24-hour duration instead of one scene?
01[00:51] <thomamelas> Yes. For the prime armor and the forces armor.
[00:51] <jake> ok!
[00:53] <jake> You leave downtown Vancouver and head across the inlet northwest, to the Sea to Sky Highway, then take that north. About seventy minutes later, in the mid-afternoon, you pull into the municipality of Squamish, British Columbia.

01[00:55] <thomamelas> Mibbit strikes again.
[00:55] <jake> aaargh mibbit
[00:55] <jake> are you logging this, btw?
01[00:55] <thomamelas> I am.
[00:55] <jake> rad, okay
[00:55] <jake> what’s the last thing you saw?
01[00:56] <thomamelas> You leave downtown Vancouver and head across the inlet northwest, to the Sea to Sky Highway, then take that north. About seventy minutes later, in the mid-afternoon, you pull into the municipality of Squamish, British Columbia.
[00:56] <jake> ahh ok
[00:58] <jake> The town immediately calls to mind Dirty Dancing. It’s the same sort of place, a mountainous resort community that seems to have had its heyday in the 1950s. The municipality is a few hectares of one-story buildings and old-timey traffic lights on dangling wires, resting in an alpine valley beneath the enormous distant mass of Mt. Garibaldi.
[01:00] <jake> The only new buildings you saw were expensive coastside hotels and condominiums stacked up along the highway to your left, barred and heavily patrolled by private security. The town proper is all slightly rusty Space Age signs for dry cleaners and automats.

01[01:01] <thomamelas> Memo> Makes a face, is a city girl. “It’s too nice.”
[01:01] <jake> ( :D )
01[01:02] <thomamelas> “Normally I would comment that places like this tend to have old evils but I do not think Kilsomething (assume BJ got it right) would allow that on his door step.”
[01:03] <jake> The address is on Cleveland Ave, one of the closest things the city has to a main drag. It turns out to be a bar that has a vaguely honky-tonk atmosphere. Bikes out front, metal grates on the windows.
01[01:04] <thomamelas> Finds a parking spot and pulls into it.
01[01:05] <thomamelas> Memo> Makes another face. “Um, I’ve found I’m not welcome in places like that.” Gesturing to her fleet sails worth of crinoline.
01[01:07] <thomamelas> “Just walk with the attitude like you belong there. A bit of challenge to your step. You are a mage of the Adamtine Arrow. You are the scarriest person in there. Well third scarriest maybe.” Checking his pistol before walking in.
[01:09] <jake> Inside, the place is pretty dead. A couple of elderly regulars prop up the bar while a pair of bikers play pool. The bikers’ eyes widen and they kind of elbow each other – heh heh, lookit that! – but the bartender, a short, middle-aged woman in a chambray shirt, just shrugs. “I guess you two’re here for Mr. Moody, then.”
[01:10] <jake> She points to a corner booth.
01[01:10] <thomamelas> “Thank you.” His accent and bearing even more pronounced. Almost aristcractic before letting it fade a bit as he leads Memo to the booth.
[01:11] <jake> Inside the booth, from a place where he can see the door, is a Squamish Indian man who looks to be in his mid-sixties. His graying hair is done back in a short ponytail and he’s dressed well but plainly in a crisp white shirt and dark pants. Something about him and his bearing almost looks like a deacon or minister..
01[01:12] <thomamelas> “May we?” Best to be polite in situations like this.
[01:13] <jake> His face is lined with the seams of age and inclement weather, but also a few scars. His eyeballs trace up and down you and Memoranda for a long moment before he makes an almost inaudible grunt.
01[01:14] <thomamelas> Slides into the booth, dragging Memo with him. “I am Blackjack and this is Memoranda.”
[01:18] <jake> "So I’ve – " he breaks into a fit of nasty coughing, wiping away a bit of drool with a paper napkin – "…shit. Pardon my French, miss. So I’ve been told. Lucky for us these people are used to seeing me with college kids and weirdos from the city, hey? I know this place doesn’t look like much, but Lacey whips up some fine tacos….
[01:18] <jake> “…and she don’t care much if I smoke. So tell me about yourselves. The short versions. I got some of it already but I want to hear your versions.”
01[01:20] <thomamelas> “Grew up in a rich family. Rebelled by going to West Point. Completed my masters in History here. Served a tour in Iraq. I was about to complete it when I ran into something and awakened. Joined the Arrow and came out here to complete my doctorate.”
01[01:21] <thomamelas> Memo> “Um, middle class family. Found it hard to fit in. Found a group that was trying magic. And one night when I was working a spell…it actually worked. Arrowsmith found me, then BJ.”
[01:26] <jake> He nods. “Okay. I’m a member of the Squamish Nation” – he says it skwo-HO-mish, where you’ve heard other people just say it skwaamish – "and I sit on its council too, for whatever that’s worth, which ain’t much. Useta be an activist. Went to pow-wows, did some mescal and peyote these boys brought up from down south…
[01:27] <jake> “…and woke up one morning to find everything outlined with light and the Sun talking to me.” He shrugs. “It was the seventies, so I didn’t think much about it till it kept happening.”

[01:29] <jake> ugh mibbit
01[01:29] <thomamelas> WB
[01:31] <jake> “Now I split my time between trying to keep halfa the province from being eaten by monsters and fighting that same province over water rights and zoning and a buncha other horseshit.” He looks into the distance and scratches his nose idly. “Anyway. I called ya up to look into a little something that caught my eye.”
[01:32] <jake> He slides a newspaper clipping over the table. This is obviously from a kind of cheesy small-town weekly newspaper, the kind that mostly runs want ads and Bible quotes.
01[01:32] <thomamelas> Picks it up and reads it.
[01:36] <jake> QUEST UNIVERSITY STUDENT FOUND FROZEN — Provincial police have reported that the man found dead in the Alice Lake Provincial Park ha been identified as Quest University student Ben Volker, 20. Volker, an ecology student, was found dead by a motorist near Stump Lake. A department spokesperson has said the man died of exposure and acute hypothermia.
[01:37] <jake> “Anythin strike you as odd about that?” Khatsalano says, eyeing you over his drink.
01[01:39] <thomamelas> “The climate is fairly mild here but you can still die of exposture. Acute hypothermia is unlikely but not impossible. But I would assume an ecology student would know that.”
[01:42] <jake> “The low this past week has been thirteen degrees. And this kid was wearing good camping gear.”
01[01:43] <thomamelas> Can I make an occult+wits check to guess what killed him?
[01:44] <jake> sure
01[01:45] <thomamelas> 6d10h8
[01:45] <critical> thomamelas, 6d10h8: 0 [6d10h8=6,3,2,4,5,6]
[01:45] <jake> You think it was probably magic. :)
01[01:46] <thomamelas> “Care to speculate on what killed him?”
[01:47] <jake> Khatsalano looks you both over. “I’ve got some notions about what this might be, but no use stirrin’ myself till I know for sure. Not when I got some fresh and eager recruits who could stand to get blooded.” He shrugs, as if to suggest that he knows it’s totally unfair, but what can you do?
01[01:49] <thomamelas> Shrugs in understand, graps rank hath it’s privilages. “Anything in particular we should be aware of when we go out there?”
01[01:49] <thomamelas> Memo> Does think it’s rather unfair but has learned it’s best to be quiet about unfairness sometimes.
[01:50] <jake> “Between the two of ya, I think you’ve got the tools to cipher this one out. But if the answer is that it was something big and scary, you call me, and I’ll come.” He writes a phone number on a paper napkin and gives it to you. "The kid’s body’s bein’ kept at Squamish General, east-ways, out by the highway. Might be you wanna look there.
[01:51] <jake> “He was found up by Stump Lake, up north a ways, in the provincial park. Campin’ type country. It’s not the middle of nowhere, but there are some things….”
01[01:52] <thomamelas> Folds his hands as he waits for him to finish that thought.
[01:53] <jake> He leans forward. "Here’s what you gotta understand. People see me, see I’m one of the Nation, they figure I’ve got a buncha Indian wisdom to dispense. Horse puckey. We had mages, yeah. Most’a them died of the pox or guns or whatever else, same as the Sleepin’ ones.
[01:53] <jake> " And they relied on oral tradition. So what you got here is untamed country with who knows what running around in it, because all that knowledge got forgotten. It’s Terra Incognita out here."
01[01:55] <thomamelas> “So it is potentially unfriendly territory with an unknown number and type of potential hostiles with unknown capabilities. Well at least it is less hot then Baghdad.”
[01:57] <jake> He nods. “That’s the right approach to take. It might be some kind of critter or spirit, it might be something intelligent that doesn’t much like humans….you need to find that out. And be careful.”
01[01:59] <thomamelas> Lookes to Memoranda. “We are scouts on this one. Find out what it is. If it is a minor thing then we talk to it or kill it. If it is a big thing then we pull back and call in the big guns.”
01[02:00] <thomamelas> Memo> Rolls her eyes at him.
[02:00] <jake> Khatsalano lights a cigarette. “Meanwhile, the big guns will be here nursin’ a beer.”
01[02:02] <thomamelas> “It was nice meeting you. We will be in touch either way.” Slides out of the booth. (Alright, to the hospital.)
[02:05] <jake> Ok! Squamish General Hospital is a not very imposing structure of 21 beds, its most prominent feature a medevac helipad on the roof, and as a sign on the front notes, it closes at 6. Very much a rural hospital.
[02:05] <jake> http://www.flickr.com/photos/52585121@N06/4844832544/sizes/z/in/photostream/
01[02:05] <thomamelas> Is it after six?
[02:06] <jake> When you enter, it’s about 4:30 in the afternoon. There are two bored-looking attendants manning the reception area, and a nurse sat in one corner doing paperwork. A door behind the staff area is labeled “morgue.”
[02:07] <jake> As you and Memo enter, everyone looks up and stares at her for a good ten seconds before one of the attendants, a young man in scrubs in his mid-twenties, moves out from behind the counter. “Afternoon, folks! What can I do you for?”
01[02:09] <thomamelas> “Yes, we are with Quest University ecology department. We are here to identify the body of one of our students.”
[02:10] <jake> ooooh ok
[02:11] <jake> that’ll be Manipulation plus Persuasion, with an extra die because you seem academic. Remember you can spend a Willpower for an extra 3 dice if you want
01[02:11] <thomamelas> (?)
01[02:11] <thomamelas> (Gonna spend that willpower. I get it back between sessions, right?)

[02:16] <jake> The attendant stops short and says…“oh. Okay, yeah.” His mood becomes somber. “Right this way, through this door.” He walks up and beeps a badge at the morgue door, which clicks open.
01[02:17] <thomamelas> Follows along, gesturing for Memo to follow.
[02:19] <jake> The attendant steps inside, clicking the lights on as he enters. The room is kept cold and rather than racks upon racks, there are a grand total of four slabs, with only one occupied at the moment.
[02:20] <jake> The head is exposed and seems to be pristine; the body is covered in a sheet. The boy, Ben Volker according to the paper, was thin and fair-haired, clean-shaven, with soft features.
[02:21] <jake> “Well…there he is.”
01[02:22] <thomamelas> Moves over to the body “It’s him. May we have a moment to say good bye?”
[02:23] <jake> The attendant hesistates. “I’m not really supposed to…ahhh…okay. Just a moment or two.” He closes the door gingerly behind him.
01[02:24] <thomamelas> Looks to Memoranda. “We have just a couple of minutes. Let us see what we can find.”
01[02:24] <thomamelas> Casting mage sight. 5d10h8
01[02:25] <thomamelas> Memoranda is using Forensic Gaze
01[02:25] <thomamelas> 5d10h8
[02:25] <critical> thomamelas, 5d10h8: 1 [5d10h8=3,3,8,7,3]

[02:25] <
critical> thomamelas, 5d10h8: 0 [5d10h8=1,1,1,2,3]
01[02:26] <thomamelas> The first one was for Memo because I didn’t realize critical doesn’t parse.
[02:27] <jake> ok!
[02:29] <jake> What Memoranda sees is that Ben Volker died about 36 hours ago, at roughly five-thirty in the morning, of exposure and cold. He really did die of the cold, but it wasn’t that cold out at the time.
[02:30] <jake> Something made his body colder than it should have been.
[02:31] <jake> There’s enough time for BJ to try casting his Supernal Vision again if he wants
01[02:32] <thomamelas> 5d10h8
[02:32] <critical> thomamelas, 5d10h8: 1 [5d10h8=3,6,4,9,5]
[02:35] <jake> What Prime sight tends to reveal is magic itself, rather than magic as it is manifested through things like electricity or gross matter. So in this hospital morgue, what BJ sees most clearly is himself, Memoranda…and, faintly, something almost more felt than seen around the boy. The hairs on BJ’s hand stand up as they get close to the body.
[02:35] <jake> Not magic, but the echoes of past magic.
[02:36] <jake> You have time for one more brief casting, you think. You might be able to identify the type of magic with more successes. And Memoranda can do stuff as well
01[02:37] <thomamelas> Memoranda is going to try to see the last thing he saw.
01[02:37] <thomamelas> 5d10h8
[02:37] <
critical> thomamelas, 5d10h8: 3 [5d10h8=9,7,2,8,[10,7]]
01[02:39] <thomamelas> BJ is going to try to examine the pattern a bit more. See if he can recognize anything about it.
01[02:39] <thomamelas> Useing will power.
01[02:39] <thomamelas> 8d10h8
[02:39] <jake> She sees a stretch of rural highway somewhere foresty, from the perspective of someone laying across the road. A car’s headlights are approaching and in the process of beginning to swerve out of the way.
[02:39] <+critical> thomamelas, 8d10h8: 0 [8d10h8=5,6,6,2,5,3,2,6]
[02:39] <jake> oh no!
01[02:39] <thomamelas> (Fuck you critical. Fuck you.)
[02:39] <jake> at least it’s not a vulgar spell
01[02:40] <thomamelas> Thankfully.
[02:44] <jake> Memoranda thinks that if she were to be on that stretch of highway again, she would recognize the spot. The newspaper clipping had said something about his body being found by a motorist so presumably this was him.
01[02:46] <thomamelas> The pair share what they found and decide to leave before questions get asked. To the spot Memoranda saw.
[02:48] <jake> Ok! We’ll leave it there for tonight, with you guys heading to the scene of the ….crime-ish type thing
01[02:48] <thomamelas> K. I should be back Tuesday.
[02:49] <jake> ok, cool! Tuesday night I’ll probably be home and bored after the new years events. if you feel up to it I would be down to continue then
01[02:49] <thomamelas> Excellent. I will see you then. And we will solve this mystery.
[02:50] <jake> Rad, ok! Hopefully critical will cooperate
01[02:50] <thomamelas> Likely he will keep faking being evil.
[02:50] <jake> yeah
[02:50] <jake> yeah
[02:51] <jake> he probably will
01[02:52] <thomamelas> Alright, I’m gonna crash now. Have a good night.
