At the Edge of All Things
Raw Log - Session 024
<ppups>: that makes sense though… if u lie for a living, after 20 years you really ought to be serial-killer good at it
<thomamelas>: For BJ at least. Ouch.
<thomamelas>: Wait, would that mean that shotguns are bumped to 8 again?
<misteranthropy>: my asset skills are subterfuge, investigation and firearms
<jake2099>: here is a tidbit: originally Rotes (magic rotes) were supposed to be literally rote actions. You’d have a big diepool and reroll all failures. That changed somewhere before final print but I suggested it to DaveB the other day and he kind of went “that is an interesting idea that might be the sort of thing we address in our chronicle book cough”
<ppups>: lol my profession is professional
<jake2099>: oh hell yes
<misteranthropy>: he actually posted his rough notes in organized fashion!
<desc>: oh handy
<jake2099>: that is fantastic
<ell>: oh god
<ell>: if I were to make myself ALL OF MY MERITS would be in Encyclopedic Knowledge
<jake2099>: lastly, combat has been changed in GMC. a lot of things that used to be common houserules are now core. defense subtracts ATTACKER’S DICE and only applies to melee; armor subtracts SUCCESSES and converts some lethal to bashing. Athletics, the skill, now adds to defense.
<jake2099>: However, if you take lethal damage, you gain the Beaten Down condition and need to spend willpower JUST TO ACT.
<jake2099>: The end result of all this!
<misteranthropy>: Willpower to take a violent act
<thomamelas>: Guns are scary and so are mages.
<misteranthropy>: you can still run away
<jake2099>: right yes
<jake2099>: just to act in a combat way, I should have specified
<jake2099>: and also weapons ADD successes if you hit
<jake2099>: this means if you get shot with a 50 cal, you are always at the very least incredibly fucked unless you had some kind of armor powerful enough to mitigate that
<ell>: does Good Time Management apply to ritual spellcasting I wonder
<jake2099>: dave specifically mentions that
<thomamelas>: Neither does libary.
<ell>: ah kk
<thomamelas>: No merits impact ritual casting unless stated otherwise.
<jake2099>: The end result of the changes is that combat is nasty and deadly. You can be a badass and get taken out of the fight round 1. willpower is super-duper important. obviously some of this is mitigated because you’re mages
<jake2099>: there are now Mook Rules for combat!
<jake2099>: and YOU THE PLAYERS decide when to invoke the
<jake2099>: er them
<jake2099>: basically the mooks get a die pool, you get a die pool, we roll, and compare results to see what happens
<jake2099>: usually you will win. if they get enough successes they might damage you or impose some kind of condition or maybe the victory is half-assed (the main guy gets away, or whatever)
<desc>: any game without great mook rules is basically unacceptable to me
<desc>: sometimes you need to knock a dozen guys’ lights out
<jake2099>: and I need to reiterate, this is a call you guys get to make
<ppups>: like last session when we just handwaved it away?
<ppups>: because who cared?
<jake2099>: exactly yeah
<jake2099>: I think it will be a huge boon to IRC
<jake2099>: save the “real” combat for the epic mage duels
<ppups>: ummm excuse me that was real combat
<ppups>: bj won it in round 1 when he scared the mages and they fled the field
<ppups>: np np
<jake2099>: there are a few other fiddly details about combat
<jake2099>: there are these things called Tilts that you get from scoring exceptionals
<jake2099>: that change the battlefield in your favor
<jake2099>: and so forth
<desc>: that sounds like Fate so i instinctively love it
<jake2099>: it is a LOT like fate
<jake2099>: me and pony were talking the other day
<jake2099>: and he was like
<jake2099>: “man the GMC is like White Wolf went around to every indie RPG of the last ten years and kind of stood over them menacingly and went ‘nice mechanic you got there’”
<jake2099>: there is burning wheel and fate and marvel heroic dna all up ins
<desc>: it is the way to go. I really think there has been this great generational shift from the previous gen of games (say FATE) to Marvel Heroic and all the World games and such
<ppups>: would be a shame if something were to HAPPEN to it
<desc>: and now that generation’s progresses are feeding back around to the new Fate core, to WoD, etc
<ppups>: you see DnD over there?
<ppups>: you remember what he was like before 5e?
<desc>: and then on the other hand there is 5e
<ppups>: just sayin’, bro
<jake2099>: next is going to be the poster child for how not to do it
<desc>: if anyone in the world were smart they would have
<jake2099>: it’s busy fleeing into the past
<desc>: I dunno, made like 4E + smallville and you play the dynamics of your party’s emotional conflicts over loot with dice pools between kobold-smashing
<desc>: but no
<jake2099>: I would have loved that
<jake2099>: so much
<jake2099>: (brb 1 sec I have to call shawn)
<ppups>: this guy invited my group to start a new campaign with him this summer
<ppups>: dnd 3.5
<ppups>: he says he doesnt understand any of the complaints with it
<desc>: fuck the police
<ppups>: players arent allowed to do anything, HE’S the dm
<ell>: wartching gae
<jake2099>: (oh hey justin! ryan is organizing an impromptu boardgame thing at his place tomorrow. interested y/n?)
<ppups>: anything they want, rather
<misteranthropy>: (can’t go—have to study )
<ppups>: we were laughing about it in chat and someone said, “dude that sounds awful; sorry” and I was like “fuck that dude I just dodged abullet!”
<jake2099>: (hahaha it’s like college all over again!)
<misteranthropy>: (for at least another two weeks)
<misteranthropy>: (then i hopefully find a new job)
<jake2099>: (now that he has a sane schedule though we might do this more often)
<jake2099>: (and you NEED to play Spartacus. holy butts it is the best game ever)
<jake2099>: (well maybe not best ever. but I love it so much)
<jake2099>: ppups: ahahahahaha
<desc>: man you guys have piqued my interest in that
<jake2099>: 3rd and 3.5 are honestly the editions of D&D that I am just not interested in playing/running again. anything else is ok! but those just gave me a migraine
<jake2099>: desc it is a great way to be a horrible dick to your best friends
<jake2099>: complete with thumbs up
<thomamelas>: 2nd had shitty rules but at least it had some flavor. 3 and 3.5 seemed so bland.
<jake2099>: they were!
<jake2099>: the awful art didn’t help
<jake2099>: all brown all the time
<desc>: a friend of mine
<jake2099>: oh the decade of the 2000s how I will not miss you
<desc>: who is my bro and I say this with love
<desc>: he is kind of a total hipster and a young
<desc>: he is really getting set on this idea of running old D&D or an old skool clone
<desc>: I own some ancient basic edition set but never played any of those old editions so I have no idea if this will be good or not but I have promised to support him
<desc>: although I did vote that we play Encounter Critical instead
<jake2099>: desc if he insists try and steer him to Rules Cyclopedia D&D, it is the sanest of the old ones
<ppups>: desc if he insists fight him until he stops insisting
<jake2099>: that works too
<desc>: i want to be a Cave Wookie and play encounter critical though :l
<jake2099>: brb need to refresh dr pepper 10
<desc>: Cave Vulcan
<desc>: I was really surprised when I read something the authors wrote about Encounter Critical and they were like
<desc>: “the game is not actually a joke”
<desc>: I was like
<desc>: it’s like
<desc>: like that cover?
<desc>: the rules are authentic to that whole thing
<desc>: so running it is probably an insane pain in the ass
<desc>: I can’t do it justice with a concise summary. I am usually skeptical of authors doing period pieces but like, the rules and writing and tone are all perfectly assembled for this straight up 1978 ridiculousness.
<jake2099>: I read a review
<jake2099>: it sounds
<ell>: so what are we doing?
<jake2099>: We are now ready to rll!
<jake2099>: or roll even!
<jake2099>: if I can type!
<ppups>: spoiler: he cant
<jake2099>: Last time (two weeks and one game edition ago!) you guys drove off the remainder of the Praetorian Guard Security force and broke into the vault of the Seattle Mysterium. There, you encountered a strangely-acting man who had gotten there before you – dark-skinned and with an odd accent, he seemed lost and confused, looking for something he couldn’t
<jake2099>: quite describe or articulate. Elithora cast her vision back to the moment of the…whatever it was that happened…and saw the lights in the Athenaeum flicker and go off, then this man appear in a scorch mark on the floor. He got up, confident and assured, and began searching the room.
<jake2099>: Then, as she watched, he met her gaze through time somehow and hit her with a psychic blast powerful enough to nearly kill her.
<jake2099>: As she fell to the floor, the man (back in real time) smiled to himself. “Of course. Rattenbury has it.” and vanished.
<desc>: Eli falling over backwards in fast-slow motion, geysering blood out her nose and mouth with the droplets syncing back into realtime at varying rates.
<jake2099>: they hang there, suspended
<jake2099>: for one perfect weightless moment
<ppups>: Startled, Goldman staggers backward. “What the hell?”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon looks at the mystagogue, “Eli!”
<ell>: “Holy fuck!”
<ppups>: “Shit!” she says. “What do we do?!?”
<misteranthropy>: 10d10h8 (Life + Gnosis + WP) He reaches out to the Primal Wild and focuses energy to repair her pattern.
<critical>: MisterAnthropy, (Life + Gnosis + WP) He reaches out to the Primal Wild and focuses energy to repair her pattern.: 3 [10d10h8=5,5,9,6,4,9,4,4,6,9]
<thomamelas>: Snaps up his gun, looking for threats. Moving closer to her.
<misteranthropy>: (take back 3 health)
<ell>: “We make sure everything is here. We call home. Someone heal Eli.” Aurelia looks staggered but is fighting to keep focused
<misteranthropy>: “Blackjack! Get Lefors! We need an immediate portal back to Vancouver!”
<ell>: “Who the fuck was that guy?”
<ppups>: “Did he leave through a portal?”
<jake2099>: It didn’t look like a Space portal, no
<thomamelas>: “On it.” Hunting for Lefores.
<ell>: “We need to secure this Athenaeum! You think the seers are just going to give up?”
<ppups>: (would Goldman know what a portal looks like, and are there other known ways of traveling through space?)
<misteranthropy>: Sinon rushes over to Elithora’s side. He begins to chant and cast his spell again.
<jake2099>: (yeah, she’s seen people travel with space portals before, any apprentice mastigos can do it)
<jake2099>: (and yes there are)
<misteranthropy>: “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright.”
<ppups>: “We didn’t HAVE many Seer issues in Seattle! I don’t know what to expect. Tell me what to do!”
<desc>: Eli is completely unconscious and very near death.
<jake2099>: Thom, BJ finds Lefors outside with the other Arrows, hastily casting some warding spells on the perimeter.
<misteranthropy>: 12d10h8 (Life + Gnosis + WP + High Speech)
<critical>: MisterAnthropy, (Life + Gnosis + WP + High Speech): 3 [12d10h8=4,1,1,5,1,8,1,2,7,6,8,9]
<misteranthropy>: (healed up and another 3, so 6 total between the two castings)
<thomamelas>: “Elithoria is down. Lefores, we need a portal for her now.”
<misteranthropy>: (she should be fine by now)
<ell>: Aurelia casts a telepathy spell to contact Minerva.
<critical>: Ell, 9d10h8: 3 [9d10h8=3,6,1,[10,2],6,7,8,9,4]
<desc>: She jolts violently as Sinon’s healing takes effect, her eyes rotating back down to the ceiling. She starts coughing and gagging in confusion. She rolls to her side and pukes up a mix of whatever was in her stomach and remaining traces of blood and lies there for a minute as her breathing slows.
<critical>: Ell, 7d10h8: 4 [7d10h8=7,8,[10,10,3],2,1,8,2]
<ppups>: Goldman casts Grim Sight on herself, looking for residue of whatever the guy did.
<critical>: ppups, 4d10h8: 1 [4d10h8=8,6,3,3]
<jake2099>: Ell, you get through, although there is..static from the Prime energy infused everywhere. “….Aurelia?”
<ell>: “fuck Eli, are you ok?”
<desc>: Eli looks at Aurie, at Sinon, and then around the room, totally shaken and bewildered. She wipes her mouth and nose a few times with her hands and then looks at her hands in confusion.
<misteranthropy>: Sinon pulls out his phone and sends a coded text to Jones. Translated: “Hostile inbound after Hierarch. After Relic? Archmage or worse.”
<jake2099>: Thom, Lefors nods tersely and follows you back inside. “One portal coming up…I hope this fuzz in the air don’t fuck with it too much, though…”
<ppups>: Goldman goes to Eli and puts a hand on her shoulder. “Hold on. That looked serious,” she says.
<jake2099>: Justin, there is a long pause and then a reply. “Acknowledged. Increasing security around Hierarch.”
<ell>: Mentally, to Minerva: “We have an emergency. Seers attacked the Seattle Athenaeum. There was… a scelestus or something in here. It nearly killed Elithora. We need help securing and cataloguing the contents. Also the… thing said something about Rattenbury and disappeared. You need to warn him.”
<ppups>: After a moment she turns to Sinon. “Thank God you were here,” she says. “That was terrifying.”
<ell>: (how we get beats?)
<jake2099>: “….mon dieu….the Athenaeum should be secure soon. The Sentinels are on their way there, if they haven’t arrived already. I will try to warn Rattenbury. Take care of our Elithora in the meantime.”
<misteranthropy>: (you should get one for emphasizing the athenaeum)
<misteranthropy>: (or we, that is for group awards)
<ell>: (ok. is someone keeping track?)
<thomamelas>: Moving over to Sinon. “How is she?”
<jake2099>: (yep! Ell, just point out when you’ve done something beat-related and I’ll add it to the tally for the night. you can also downgrade failures into Dramatic Failures for a beat on the spot)
<ell>: (ok, +1 beat then)
<jake2099>: (BJ has also gotten you guys one for focusing on protecting Eli)
<misteranthropy>: “She should be fine.” Sinon stands and holds a hand out lit her up. “In fact, she should be able to move around.”
<desc>: Eli stands up with Sinon’s help. She looks around and down at her bloodied shirt. “Um.”
<desc>: “He saw me. He saw me watching him from the present.”
<jake2099>: Lefors comes in with BJ and hastily begins drawing a teleportation circle in Sharpie on the smooth concrete floor.
<ell>: ‘in the past?"
<ppups>: “What?” asks Goldman in confusion. “How?”
<misteranthropy>: Sinon nods and pulls his black journal from his jacket. "Whatever it was that scrambled that mage’s mind may have been here."
<desc>: “I don’t understand how. It shouldn’t be possible. He looked at me and then … a hammer hit my center.”
<ppups>: (did Aurelia learn anything while he was patching up his mind?)
<thomamelas>: “I am going to try to see if I can find any traces of what attacked Eli.” Peering through prime sight.
<ppups>: “Are you okay?”
<ell>: ( i don’t know i was not there)
<ppups>: (while she)
<critical>: MisterAnthropy, 8d10h8: 2 [8d10h8=9,7,[10,1],2,6,7,3,7]
<jake2099>: (hrm I don’t seem to have the log of the last session)
<misteranthropy>: (Wits + Investigation (Artifacts) + Order Bonus + Masque Bonus + WP for Rote Action) The Guardian begins looking around for anything that may have been able to cause such an effect.
<misteranthropy>: 6d10h8;r9 so re-roll 6 dice
<critical>: MisterAnthropy, 6d10h8: 3 [6d10h8=5,1,[10,8],8,6,7]
<ppups>: (believe it’s on OP)
<misteranthropy>: (five successes!)
<misteranthropy>: (by such an item, i mean something that may have scrambled the mage’s brain… which we should not have fixed)
<ppups>: (jake did it, blame jake)
<misteranthropy>: (nah, it was my bad… wanting to question the witness)
<ell>: (jake! gmpcing me to do something bad!)
<misteranthropy>: (but it worked out for dramatic timing)
<desc>: Eli looks to Goldman. “I don’t know. I guess so. What happened? How long did that take?”
<misteranthropy>: (so its all good)
<jake2099>: Okay! Sinon is able to conclusively determine that nothing here would have been able to derange the guy. There are things here with mental effects, but many of the artifacts are in kind of a state of stasis after being at the epicenter of this huge Prime explosion. Some have been ruined, others have shut down, like circuit breakers.
<jake2099>: THom, your Prime sight is kind of overwhelmed. It’s like taking a geiger counter to the center of a nuclear reactor
<ppups>: (what about my grim sight)
<ppups>: (yeah justin what the fuck, this is america, we don’t question witnesses here)
<misteranthropy>: (uuhh this is canada)
<ppups>: (we manipulate them into confessing!)
<misteranthropy>: (or no seattle)
<jake2099>: Grim sight is showing nothing Death-related here beyond the occasional artifact that was probably used to kill someone at some point – a Zuni flint dagger, a wand, a book and so forth.
<ppups>: (nuh-uh! we haven’t crossed back yet)
